Long-time Niigata residents know that the passing of summer means only a few precious weeks of decent weather remain before the onset of several months of winter nastiness. In other words, for us petanquers there's no time like the present for a convivial afternoon on the piste.

I propose we gather at Nishi Ohata Park in the PM (from 1:00) of Saturday, September 10. I'll fire up the barbie and roast a feed of bratwurst (Wisconsin style), complete with sauerkraut and the fixin's. If someone could bring buns (or tell me where to get them), the assist would be most welcome. Drinks?- the usual BYO policy applies.

The more the merrier, as they say, so spread the good word. And finally, an addendum to the previous: the single ladies in the club have asked me to relay the following: the "welcome piste" will most definitely be rolled out for all the unattached guys in Niigata and beyond (looks, bank balance [if any], employment status, etc. are immaterial); let's do some social networking to help them out.

Good news, fellow petanquers. The World Anti-doping Agency has finally sobered up a bit regarding its prohibition of alcohol at sanctioned petanque matches.

Now this ban never prevented the members of our forward-thinking club from improving their aim, either before or during a match, by sipping the occasional glass of chardonnay or real ale over the course of a long, hot afternoon on the piste.

It's just good to know that the world body's thinking on this important matter is no longer so befuddled.

There's real cause for celebration here, for this means we're one bowl closer to removing the ban on crack.

Doping Agency Lifts Alcohol Ban for Pétanque
Devotees of pétanque will now be able to enjoy a glass of pastis before a match again: The World Anti-Doping Agency is to remove alcohol from its list of prohibited substances for competitions.
Only the French, those masters of civilized living, could have invented the sport of pétanque. The game, a form of boules, involves throwing metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden jack, and can easily be played while smoking a Gauloise and drinking a glass of pastis.

Now competition pétanque players, who were previously banned from drinking during matches, can enjoy a glass too. The World Anti-Doping Agency, which coordinates the fight against doping in sport, has cut alcohol from its list of illegal substances for boules competitions.

The agency was responding to a petition by the World Boules Federation (CMSB), the French newspaper Libération reported Tuesday. "Let's be sensible," CMSB president Romolo Rizzoli told the newspaper. "You can drive a car after drinking two glasses of wine, but you can't play boules?" Rizzoli then wrote a letter to WADA, which heard his plea.

Boules will be taken off the list of sports for 2008 in which alcohol is prohibited. The list is now reduced to seven, including archery, billiards and powerboating, among others.

Boules players still have a long list of substances to avoid in competition, however. As well as the usual suspects of anabolic steroids, growth hormones, and beta-blockers, players are specifically instructed to abstain from cocaine, hashish, and heroin.

What: petanque and picnic- as to the latter, bring your own (and a little to share) pastis and edibles; those who prefer more strenuous exercise than is offered by our civilized pasttime are encouraged to bring appropriate sports equipment.

Time: from high noon (I'll be there from 12:00 to set up the BBQ, but expect most others to start arriving after 1:00.)

Place: Nishi Ohata park (if rain, the inclement weather location, from 2:00- and no BBQ, sorry)

Who: petanquers and non-petanquers alike are welcome (even the uninitiated who refer to our noble game as 'kerplunk')

Finally, a tantalizing tit-bit: Russell will regale us with his long-anticipated first public performance of La Marseillaise.

Sept 5th Club day report

Hi Everyone

First I'd like to say thank you to everyone who came along on Sunday to our club day and it was nice to see some players who hadn't been in a while . The temp at the park was not too bad and one end of the park offered plenty of shade in which to play and the hard packed clay surface meant you didn't need to put a lot of effort into making your boules roll. It was also my last day at petanque as I will not have Sunday's off once I start my new job managing Furumachi Bicycle shop. But I'd like to say a big thank you to all the members of NCP as over the last 3 years or so I've seen the club grow and because of our friendly atmosphere it has been a lot of fun. Also it has been nice to take part in the Niigata Open petanque tournament organised by the Kobori club and a great chance to meet other petanque clubs from throughout the Niigata City area. From now on Brian Southwick will be looking after the club blog so if you want to know anything regarding the club please leave a message for him on the blog. If I ever get the chance again I'd love to come along to one of our club days and if you are in the Nishibori area please drop by Furumachi Bicycle and say hello. August 15th BBQ report

First I'd like to say thank you to everybody who came along to our BBQ event today at the beach and because of the hard rain the previous day which made the nearby baseball soft we didn't end up playing any petanque at all but we all enjoyed some great food that was cooked on the BBQ thanks to one of Akiko's class mates from college who brought it along.

Also our next petanque meet which will be held on the 5th of Sept will be my last petanque meet as I will be starting a new job here in Niigata city mid Sept and I will be working on Sunday's. I have really enjoyed seeing the club grow from our very 1st meet at Nishi Ohata park several years ago with only 5 members to our current membership and it has been nice to see more people take an interest in petanque so hopefully that will continue in the future. Our club has also had the chance to play in some Niigata city petanque tournaments which has been a great way to test our skills against other clubs from the region. So after our Sept 5th meet for those who are interested we will be having a few drinks at " The Local " for my farewell and Junko's birthday.

It appears that none of our current members own a BBQ so if you are planning on coming this Sunday to the BBQ event just bring a bento instead of something to cook on a BBQ. There is also a great playing surface just near across from where we will be sitting so bring your boules as well.

August 15th Club BBQ

Hi Everybody

This year we holding our Summer BBQ party at Hiyoriyama beach again as it was so successful last year. The reason we are holding it there and not at our home ground at Nishi Ohata park is that you are not supposed to have a BBQ in Nishi Ohata park so rather than getting in trouble from the local police we have picked the location above.

The BBQ will be held on August the 15th at the location above. If you are coming by bus it's a 10 min walk from " Yoko Shichi Bancho Nichome " there is also plenty of car parking for those who are driving there and as we currently only have one very small BBQ if you happen to have another BBQ please bring it along.

I will try to get there early ( Before 11am ) and set up under the covered shade area if it's not already taken. It's a BYO event - which means Bring Your Own food & drink, just bring along anything you want. There is also plenty of space at that area so we should be able to have a few games of petanque in between eating and drinking. If you are free please come along and if you know someone else who would like to come please invite them as well.

今年は、私達は日和山海岸で夏のバーベキュー会を開催することにしました。私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園ではなく上記の会場で開催する理由は次の通りです。西大畑公園でのバーベキューは許可されていないのです。従って近くの交番とトラブルになるよりはということで上記の場所を選んだのです。

バーベキュー会は８月15 日に上記の場所で開催されます。もしバスでやって来るのであれば“横七番町２丁目”からは徒歩１０分ですし、車でやって来る人用の駐車場も十分なスペースがあります。今のところ私たちには小さいバーベキューがひとつしかありませんので、もしバーベキューをお持ちでしたらどうぞ持って来てください。都合がつく方はどうぞやって来てください。もし誰か来たい人がいたらどうぞ招待してください。

August 1st petanque meet

Hi Everyone

Well even though it was rather humid weather just over 10 people showed up for petanque and several games of doubles & triples were played throughout the afternoon. Also I must say a big thank you to Noriko who dropped by Nishi Ohata park to deliver a a Banana cake that she made, which everybody really enjoyed - Thanks a lot Nori it was delicious. Late in the afternoon a slightly cool breeze came through the park which made playing even more pleasant. The highlight for most of the players was the final game of the day between Russell , Akiko & Don VS Sunil, Brian & Takeyama san. Our team started off very slowly with the opposition gaining a 8 - 0 lead after the 1st couple of ends then we managed to gain two points but by that time the leaders were holding 12 - 2 . In this situation most people would think that the game is over with the leaders holding 12 - 2 but I know from past experience that is not always the case and it really depends on how determined the losing team is at winning the match which is exactly what happened today. The losing team ended up winning 13 - 12 much to the surprise of the other team. It was a exciting end to the days play and one of the best games I have taken part in this year. So thanks to everybody who came along. Pictured above are a few photos taken at the park and my newly restored 30 year old Vespa 50s which I rode into the city on today.

みなさん、こんにちは。

今日はかなり蒸し蒸しした日だったんですが、１０人ちょっとの人達がペタンクにやって来てくれて、ダブルスやトリプルスで午後のひと時を楽しみました。また、手作りのバナナケーキを届けるために西大畑公園に寄ってくれたノリコさんには大感謝です。みんな喜んで食べていました。大変おいしかったです。ノリコさん、ありがとうございました。午後遅くには涼しいそよ風が公園を吹きぬけてペタンクのプレーはより一層楽しいものになりました。大部分のプレーヤーにとってその日一番のハイライトはラッセル、アキコ、ドン対スニル、ブライアン、タケヤマさんで戦われた最終ゲームでした。私達のチームは非常にスロースタートで最初の２，３エンドが終わった時点では８対０で相手チームにリードを許していました。その後私達のチームは盛り返して２点を取りましたが、その時点では相手チームに１２対２とリードされていました。１２対２でリードを許している状況では、ほとんどの人はこれでゲームオーバーと考えることでしょう。しかし、私は過去の経験からかならずしもいつもそうはならないことを知っています。要するに負けているチームが試合の勝利に向けてどれだけ強い気持ちを持っているかによって決まるのです。そして今日はまさにその通りのことが起こったのです。負けていたチームが最終的には１３対１２で勝利するという、相手チームもびっくりするようなことが起こったのです。今日１日のプレーの締めくくりとしては何ともエキサイティングで、私にとっては今年のベストプレーとなりました。今日参加してくれたみなさん、ありがとうございました。上の写真は今日の西大畑公園で撮ったものです。私が西大畑公園へ乗ってきた、修理が終わったばかりの３０年前のヴェスパの写真もあります。

July 18th Bastille day event

Well as it was so hot today we only had a small turn out of players but even though it was 33 deg 6 members showed up at our home ground to play some friendly matches under the shade of the trees surrounding Nishi Ohata park. I like to say thank you to Haruki & Naoko who brought along some fantastic boutique beer and accompanied by the wine I brought along we had a rather pleasant afternoon. When I arrived there was already a doubles game in progress which was Haruki , Naoko vs Brian & Junko , I can't remember the exact score but Haruki & Naoko won. While the others took a rest Brian & I played a singles match which ended up being rather embarrassing as I was unable to score even one point and Brian won with a final score of 13 - 0 . After that my game improved and we played some triples once Nori arrived. Whilst we were playing some local youngsters we practicing soccer and during a break in between one of our games Haruki introduced them to the game of petanque and after a few practice ends we invited them to play against us in a game of triples. For beginners they placed some fantastic shots and for such young players did very well and tried their hardest to beat us , but with two club members from from the team " Peisty Boys " who are currently ranked 2nd in the Niigata city area they unfortunately lost, only time will tell if they trade in their soccer kit for a brand new set boules. Later in the day Brian fired up his traditional Japanese BBQ and cooked some fantastic fish for those who were left to enjoy. Later next month we will be having our annual BBQ so keep a lookout on the blog for more details and if you're free please come along.

【７月１８日のバスチーユデイ・イベント】
今日はとても暑かったので参加したのは少人数のプレーヤーだけでした。それでも、３３℃の猛暑にもめげずに西大畑公園を囲んでいる木々の木陰でペタンクを楽しむために６人のメンバーが集まりました。素敵な地ビールを持って来てくれた春樹と直子にはお礼を言いたいと思います。私が持参したワインもあり、私達は楽しい午後のひと時を過ごしました。私が公園に到着した時にはすでに春樹・直子VSブライアン・純子のダブルスのゲームが進行中でした。正確なスコアは覚えていませんが、春樹・直子のチームの勝ちでした。他の人達が休憩中に私とブライアンがシングルス・マッチを行いましたが、とても恥ずかしい結果に終わってしまいました。なぜならば、私は１点も挙げることができずに、最終スコア１３対0でブライアンの完勝でした。その後は私も調子を取り戻してノリコさんが到着してからはトリプルスのゲームを楽しみました。ちょうど私達がペタンクをしている時にすぐ近くで地元の少年達がサッカーの練習をしていました。ゲームの合間に春樹が少年達にペタンクというゲームの手ほどきをしました。少年達が少し練習をした後で、私達は彼らをトリプルスのゲームに誘いました。少年達はまったくの初心者なんですが、時折り素晴らしいショットを放ったりして大健闘しました。少年達は私達を打ち負かそうと大奮闘しましたが、なにせ私達のチームは二人が" Peisty Boys "のメンバーで、今や" Peisty Boys "は新潟市地区の二位にランクされているのです。残念ながら少年達はペタンクのゲームで負けてしまいました。彼らが将来、サーカーの道具をペタンクの真新しいブール・セットに持ち替えるかどうかは時間が経ってみないと分かりません。夕方にはブライアンが日本の伝統的なBBQ（七輪）に火を熾して、残っていた人達のために新鮮な魚（鰯）を焼いてくれました。来月後半にはNCP恒例のBBQを開催する予定です。詳細についてはこのブログを注意して見ていてください。そして、時間のある方はどうぞ参加してください。

July 4th petanque meet

Well as it was pretty hot we only had a small turnout of players but were were able to play several games of doubles & triples despite the hot humid weather. In between games we sat in the shade and chatted while consuming some nice cool beers. We even ended up introducing the game to a local who happened to drop by the park as we were playing, he seemed to really enjoy himself and who knows we may even see him again in the future. Pictured above are a few photos taken at todays meet and if you are free on the 3rd Sunday of this month please come along as it's always nice to see more players.

June 6th club day report

Well it was a perfect day for a few leisurely games of petanque at our home ground of Nishi Ohata park, the trees are nice and green giving plenty of shade to players waiting for a game and the ground was nice and hard which produced a nice surface for pointing etc. Even though there were only 6 of us there we played several games of singles, doubles and triples throughout the afternoon. Some of the games were very close and other games were won by big leads like 13 - 1 , I won't mention who lost the 13 - 1 game to protect the identities of the players involved. 【６月６日のクラブ例会のリポート】
今日は私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園でのんびりとペタンクをするには絶好の日和でした。木々は美しく青々としてゲーム待ちのプレーヤーに十分な日蔭を与えてくれていました。グラウンドの表面はコンディション良好で硬くて、ブールの投球には最適でした。私達のクラブメンバーは６人しか参加がありませんでしたが、私達はシングルス、ダブルス、トリプルスのゲームで午後の時間を楽しみました。いくつかのゲームは接戦でしたし、それ以外には１３対１のような大差のゲームもありました。１３対１のゲームで誰が負けたのかについては、関係するプレーヤーが特定されないようにあえて言及はしませんけどね。上の写真は今日、西大畑公園で撮られたものです。

Niigata Open tournament report - Sunday 16th of May

Hi Everyone

Today was the Niigata Open triples petanque tournament , this tournament is hosted by the Niigata petanque club which has their home ground at the Kobari baseball ground. The tournament is usually held twice a year once in May & again in October. But last October the event was canceled due to rain so everybody was looking forward to today's event as there hadn't been a chance to play against each other since last year for many of the teams. Luckily today was a fantastic hot sunny day and 22 teams took part in the tournament representing 7 different clubs from throughout the Niigata city area. NCP entered two teams which were basically the same as last year except for Russell Jenkins who joined the Peisty Boys. Our 1st game of the day was played on a very soft peiste which took some getting used to as it was so different from our hard packed clay surface at Nishi Ohata park. But it didn't seem to affect our opponents who easily won the match. From then on we found our form and continued winning the next two games before lunch.

At lunch time the Peisty Boys were leading the tournament and after lunch we ended up moving to a hard packed peiste which was rather fast and quite different from the previous peiste. We had two very closely fought matches where the game could have easily been won by our opponents whose pointing skills were fantastic and we had to work very hard to win the two matches, one of the teams we played against were last years champions from Tagami . We ended up in the final against a team from the host club Kobari and on that team was Suzuki san who has visited our club several times to play over the last year or so. His pointing skills are fantastic and in no time the game was over with Kobari winning the tournament. The ladies team unfortunately didn't fare so well and faced some tough competition from their 1st match of the day but they did get a consolation prize each which was some washing powder. The Peisty Boys were presented with book vouchers as their 2nd place prize.

I would also like to thank the Kobari club for hosting a fantastic tournament as I know a lot of work goes into organizing a tournament of this size. If you ever get the chance to join one of their tournaments please do as it's a lot of fun and the perfect way to test your skills against a wide variety of players.

NCP Junior training programme

Here at Niigata City petanque club we believe you are never too young to learn so it's with great pleasure that I introduce our NCP junior training programme. Our youngest player is now 16 months old and as you can see from the photo above already has a feel for the game. Although a lighter set of boules may be in order she will now doubt gain great strength from using the same weight boules that her father currently plays with. Although this may seem tough at first the benefits of playing with an adult set of boules while only a toddler has it's advantages as most people would easily dismiss someone so young as being inexperienced and unable to lob high shots directly onto the opponents boule. While these advanced playing techniques require some practice that's not really a problem for a toddler who has no work comments and has plenty of time to develop their form.

ここ新潟市ペタンククラブでは、ペタンクを学ぶのに若すぎるということはないと確信しています。従って、“NCPジュニア・トレーニング・プログラム”を紹介するのは大きな喜びです。私達のクラブの最年少プレーヤーは現在年齢１６ヵ月です。上の写真からも分かるようにもう既にゲームへの雰囲気が感じられます。本来であれば彼女にはもっと軽いブールが適切なんですが、彼女の父親が使用するブールを使用することで今や間違いなく素晴らしい力強さを獲得することでしょう。色々な経験を積んだり対戦相手のブール上にロブ・ショットを放ったりするには幼過ぎるということで、よちよち歩きの幼少時に大人のブールでプレーするということは多くの人達からは簡単に否定さてしまうかも知れません。通常よりも先んじてプレーをするには練習が必要ですが、一方ではよちよち歩きの幼児はプレーの結果をとやかく言われることも無いし、フォームを開発する多くの時間もあるのです。

Well we were blessed with fine weather for a change and it was 19 deg , we haven't seen weather like this for ages so it was nice to be able to play back on our home ground of Nishi Ohata park. We played several games of doubles & triples throughout the day and in between playing we enjoyed a few beers and a wine or two. The weather was fantastic but because of the hot weather the park surface was as hard as concrete which meant the boules were rolling rather fast and either falling short of the target or rolling beyond where we really wanted them to go but in the end we had some very close matches . It was also great to see 3 of our original members Haruki & Naoko & Minagawa san who came all the way from from Guma as we haven't seen any of them for quite some time. I can't believe it's been 4 years since I first suggested the idea of forming a petanque club and over those 4 years our club has grown and we have had a lot of fun introducing people to the joys of petanque.

Our next event will be the Niigata open petanque tournament which is to be held at the Kobari baseball ground on the 16th of march , our club has entered two teams and even if you are not playing you are welcome to come along and watch, this is the biggest Niigata city pentanque tournament that's held annually and attracts players from the various clubs throughout the Niigata City area.

さて、清々しい気分になる晴天に恵まれ、気温も１９度となりました。こんな良い天気は長い間なかったので、ホームグラウンドの西大畑公園に戻ってプレーできるということは本当に素晴らしいことでした。1日たっぷりとダブルスやトリプルスのゲームを楽しみ、プレーの合間にはビールやワインも楽しみました。天気は大変素晴らしかったのですが、炎天のせいでグラウンドの表面はコンクリートのように固くなっていました。ということはブールの転がりが早過ぎるために狙った目標に届かなかったりあるいは目標を通り越してしまったりするということですが、例会の終盤にはいくつかの接戦も演じられました。春樹、直子そしてはるばる群馬から参加してくれた皆川さんの３人の創立メンバーと会えたことも素晴らしいことでした。長い間この３人のメンバーと会う機会はなかったのですから。私が最初にペタンククラブを結成するというアイデアを提案してからもう４年も経ったとは信じられない思いです。この４年間に私達のクラブは成長を遂げ、ペタンクの楽しさを多くの人に紹介するという沢山の喜びもありました。

私達のクラブの次のイベントは５月１６日に小針野球場で開催される“新潟オープン・ペタンクトーナメント”です。私達のクラブからは２チームがエントリーしています。ペタンクをしていない人でもどうぞやって来て観戦してください。これは毎年開催されて新潟市周辺の多くのクラブからプレーヤーが集結する新潟市では最大級のペタンクイベントです。

Hi Everybody

Well as it was the peak season for Hanami parties ( cheery blossom viewing parties ) we decided not to play petanque at all and join everybody else at our home ground of Nishi ohata park for a drinking party instead of petanque. It would not have been safe to play petanque at the park anyhow due to the large numbers of people sitting around on blue plastic sheets eating & drinking so we found a spot in the corner of the park to set up our own blue sheet. After drinking & consuming lunch the weather turned for the worse and it rained rather hard so we took shelter in a covered seating area located nearby. While under cover & protected by the rain we witnessed many of the large groups packing up quickly and leaving the park. And as luck would have it, not long after everybody had left the sun came out again and it was rather nice. We then moved to the lawn outside the covered seating area and not long after that several other petanque members showed up. While sitting there we witnessed a local festival carrying a portable shrine around the streets who happened to stop by the park. We also discussed the up coming Niigata open petanque tournament and talked about how many teams we going to enter. Pictured above are a few photos taken at the park today
【４月１８日のクラブ例会のリポート】
みなさん、こんにちは。
お花見（観桜会）の最盛期だったので、私達はペタンクは完全に中止にしてホームグラウンドの西大畑公園の多くの人達のようにペタンクの代わりに飲み会をすることにしました。公園ではいたるところで大人数のグループがブルーシートに座って飲んだり食べたりしていたのでペタンクをするのは安全ではなかったかも知れません。私達は公園の片隅に場所を見つけてブルーシートを広げました。飲んだりランチを食べたりした後で天気が急に悪くなってかなり激しい雨となったので、私達は近くの東屋で雨宿りをしました。東屋から見ていると多くの大人数のグループがあっという間に荷物をまとめて公園から撤収して行きました。幸運にも多くの人達が去った後まもなく再び陽が差して来て思いがけない晴天になりました。私達が東屋を出て芝地に移動するとほどなくして他のペタンクメンバー達が新たにやって来ました。しばらく座っていると、地元のお祭りで人々が御神輿を担いでやって来て公園の近くで止まるのが見えました。また、私達は次回の“新潟オープン・ペタンクトーナメント”についても話し合い、私達のクラブからのエントリーチーム数などについても話し合いました。上の写真は当日、公園で撮った写真です。

April 4th club meet report

Hi Everybody

Well finally we had a sunny Sunday, We haven't had any fine weather for such a long time so it was great to see the sun come out and get together for some petanque at our home ground of Nishi Ohata park. The park was still a little damp which caused some big dents due to high lob shots but that didn't really affect the outcome of any of the games. Most of us had not played petanque since last year so it took some time to find our form again after such a long break. Several games of doubles were played throughout the afternoon with some close scores, we also discussed the up coming club doubles tournament and it was decided that it would most likely clash with the " Hanami Party " season which means if the cherry blossoms are in bloom we could not play petanque because of the vast numbers of people who come to the park to view the blossom ( eat & drink under the trees ) so we might as well join them and have a hanami party instead. The club doubles tournament will be moved to a later date in out event calendar

Also coming up in May is our clubs 4 year anniversary so after playing that day we'll head out for dinner & drinks somewhere and on the 16th of May the Kobari club is hosting the Niigata Open tournament again, if you missed out on joining this event last year I highly recommend in attending the tournament as it's very well organized by the host club and several clubs from throughout the Niigata city area come to take part in it. Once I receive more info on this up coming tournament the info will be posted on the blog.

Hi Everybody

I'm sorry I have posted anything for quite some time but I have not attended petanque club since the last posting on this blog, due to the recent bad weather we have been having. But it seems the weather is slowly improving and when I have time I hope to get along to our monthly meets. Coming up in April is our 1st event of the year which is our annual club doubles tournament so on April the 4th we can organise some teams for those who are interested in playing in the doubles tournament. Also in early May is our clubs 4 year annivarsary so maybe we can plan a party for that evening after enjoying some petanque. Also if the weather is bad we will always play at our wet weather spot under the bridge and if fine we'll be at our home ground of Nishi Ohata park. If anyone has any photos or info that would like to see posted on the club blog please send them to me and I'll make sure they get up loaded.

【来るべきイベント】
みなさん、こんにちは。
かなり長い間ブログの更新が滞ってしまい申し訳ありませんでした。最近までの悪天候のために前回のブログの更新以降は私はクラブ例会に出席していなかったのです。しかし、ゆっくりとではありますがどうやら天気も良くなって来ているようです。時間がある時にはまた毎月の例会をやっていきたいものと思っています。来る４月には今年最初の私達のクラブのイベントであるクラブ・ダブルス・トーナメントが行われます。当日の４月4日にはこのダブルス・トーナメントでプレーするチームの編成を行いましょう。また、５月初旬は私達のクラブの4周年記念なので、ペタンクを楽しんだ後で夕方には多分パーティーを開催することになります。また、天気が悪ければいつもの橋の下の雨天用の会場でプレーしますし、天気が良ければホームグラウンドの西大畑公園となります。このブログに載せた方が良いと思われる写真をお持ちの方はそれを私に送ってください。私がブログにアップします。

Hi Everybody

Well today was our first petanque meet of the year and being as it's so cold I didn't expect many people to show up, but not long after I arrived Akiko turned up and we had a couple of games together. Later on Sai chan arrived to collect her new Obut boules that she had ordered from me and then she played a game against Akiko. Because it's so cold and there is still snow on the ground we will be using our wet weather location under the bridge until things get warmer. So if you are keen to play a couple of games over the winter season someone is usually under the bridge by 1.30pm and because it gets cold & dark early we will finish up before 4pm.

【１月１７日のクラブ例会のリポート】
みなさん、こんにちは。

さて、今日は私達のクラブの今年最初の例会でした。あまりにも寒い天気なので多くの人達がやって来るとは期待していませんでしたが、私が到着してまもなくアキコさんがやって来たので、私達は２、３ゲームを一緒に楽しみました。少し後にはサイちゃんが私を通じて注文してあったObutのブールを受け取りにやって来て、アキコさんと対戦しました。非常に寒い天気で地面にはまだ雪が残っているような状態なので、温かくなって来るまでは私達は雨天用の会場を使用する予定です。この冬の時期にペタンクをしたいと思ったら橋の下の雨天用の会場へどうぞやって来てください。午後１時半頃には誰かが来ているはずです。早い時間に寒くて暗くなってしまうので４時頃には終了の予定です。

寒い日が続きますのでみなさまご自愛ください。

Hi Everyone

I hope you all had a great Xmas and a Happy New Year and I have just worked out the NCP schedule for 2010. As many of you may already know our club took part in a couple of tournaments with the Niigata petanque club in 2009 which is based in Kobari and it was great to have the chance to play against other local petanque players from different clubs within the Niigata city area. So I have included these events on this years schedule and if the opportunity arises I hope we can play an inter club tournament with Kobari sometime at their grounds once the weather warms up. Our 1st meet of the year will be on Jan 17th and with the current weather conditions I expect that we will be playing at our wet weather spot under the bridge for quite some time until it gets warmer. As it's still very cold I don't expect too many people to show up, but if you have got a couple of spare hours come along and play a game or two. If you have any ideas for events that could be added to this years playing schedule please contact me any time.

私は、みなさんが素晴らしいクリスマスと新年を迎えられたことを願っています。私は今しがた２０１０年のＮＣＰのスケジュールを考えたところです。みなさんの多くが既に御存じのように、私たちのクラブは小針で開催された２００９年の新潟ペタンククラブのトーナメントに参加しました。新潟市近辺の色々なクラブに所属する地元のプレーヤー達と試合をする機会を持てたことは非常に素晴らしいことでした。従って、私はこれらのイベントを今年のスケジュールに加えることにしました。そしてもし機会があれば暖かい天気の頃にでも小針とクラブ対抗戦を開催できればと思います。私たちのクラブの今年最初の例会は１月１７日に開催されますが、現在の気象状況下では天気が暖かくなるまでは橋の下の雨天用の会場で開催することになるのではないかと思っています。非常に寒い天気なので多くの人達の参加は期待できませんが、２～３時間の余裕があればどうぞやって来て１ゲームでも２ゲームでも参加して下さい。今年のプレースケジュールに追加すべきアイデアなどありましたら、いつでも結構ですので私に連絡してください。

End of year Xmas party report

Hi Everyone

Well first I'd like to thank everybody who came along to play petanque this year with the Niigata City Petanque Club and it was nice to see some new members join up as well. Also our club played for the first time in the Niigata City Petanque tournament which was hosted by the Kobari petanque club. It was a good chance to test out our playing skills against others and in the 1st tournament we joined one of our teams came 2nd overall which was a great effort. Also some of our female players took part in a mixed triples tournament also held at the kobari club and did rather well. Pictured above are a few photos of our last meet of the year which was held under the bridge due to bad weather and because it was so cold we only ended up playing 3 games of doubles before leaving. Later in the day we met up again to go to a buffet restaurant for dinner only to find out it has closed down, but Brian recommend a nearby Yaki niku shop so we went there for dinner instead, followed by a few drinks at " The Local " . Over the New Year vacation I'll post info on next years schedule and the 1st playing dates for the New Year.

【年末のクリスマスパーティーのリポート】
みなさん、こんにちは。

私はまず最初に、今年ペタンクをするために私達のクラブ“the Niigata City Petanque Club”の例会にやって来てくれたすべてのみなさんに感謝したいと思いますし、何人かの新しいメンバーと出会えたことは非常に嬉しいことでした。また、私達のクラブは“小針ペタンク・クラブ”が開催した“新潟市ペタンク・トーナメント”に初めて参加しました。それは他のクラブに対して私達の競技技術を試してみる良い機会となりました。また、私達が参加した最初のトーナメントでは私達のチームのひとつが全体の２位に入賞したことは大健闘だったと思います。また、私達のクラブの女性メンバーが同じく“小針ペタンク･クラブ”が開催したトリプルス・トーナメントに参加しましたがなかなかの健闘でした。上の写真は私達の今年最後の例会の写真です。天気が悪かったために橋の下の雨天用会場で開催したのですが、あまりにも寒くてダブルスを３ゲームしただけで会場を後にしました。後ほど懇親会のためにビュッフェ・レストランで再集合したのですが何と目的のレストランは閉まっていました。しかし、近くにブライアンお勧めの焼肉店があり、私達は代わりにその店で懇親会を行い、その後でさらに“ザ・ローカル”で軽く飲みました。正月休み中には、来年の予定や新年の“プレー初め”の日どりをこのブログでお知らせします。

This year for our Xmas party we'll be playing some friendly games at Nishi Ohata park and because it gets dark so early now we'll be starting at 11am. If the weather is bad we'll play at our wet weather location under the bridge. Also after playing petanque for those who want to we'll be having our Xmas dinner party again at " The Buffet Style Rouji " and as you can see from below they offer a very good deal on dinner & drinks. So if you are free please come along on Sunday, we'll go to dinner once we finish playing petanque.

New Zealand secondary schools doubles tournament

Hi Everyone

Just today I received some mail from NZ and amongst the newspaper articles was the above article featuring the winners of the southern region secondary schools doubles tournament. The two boys pictured above are in 6th form which in Japan would be ni nen sei .So it seems petanque in NZ is slowly getting more popular with younger players which is great to see. I wonder if we'll ever see high school petanque tournaments in Japan ?

みなさん、こんにちは。
ちょうど今日、私はニュージーランドからの郵便を何通か受け取りました。新聞記事の中に南島地区のセカンダリースクール・ダブルストーナメントの勝者を特集した上記の記事がありました。上記の写真の二人の少年は６年生で日本では高校２年生に相当します。これを見ると、ニュージーランドではペタンク人気が若い人たちの間に徐々に広まっていることが分かりますが、嬉しいことですね。日本でも高校生のペタンクトーナメントを見かけるなんてことが将来あるんでしょうかね？

Nov 1st club day

Hi Everyone

First I'd like to thank everyone who turned out today at our wet weather spot under the bridge. At 1pm the weather was not bad but with a 90% chance of rain we decided to hold our club day under the bridge and it was lucky we did as the weather turned bad early in the afternoon and rained quite heavily. In all 8 members showed up so we played several games of doubles and later on we played a triple match as well, which was a little tricky as it now gets dark quite early which made it difficult to see where your boules were on the court. Pictured above are a few photos that were taken today under the bridge.

私はまず最初に、今日橋の下の私達の雨天用の会場へやって来てくれた皆にお礼を言いたいと思います。午後１時の時点では天候はそれほど悪くはありませんでしたが、予報によれば降水確率９０％だったので、私達はクラブ例会を橋の下で開催することにしました。午後の早い段階で天候が悪化して激しい雨になったので、橋の下に会場を移したのはラッキーでした。全部で８人のメンバー達が参加してくれたのでダブルスのゲームを何試合か行いましたし、後半はトリプルスのゲームも行いました。最近は暗くなるのが早いので、コートのどこに自分のブールがあるのか分かりづらいので少し慎重を要しました。上の写真は当日橋の下で撮ったものです。

Hi Everyone

I have just received a report of the triples tournament that was held on Sunday October the 18th at the Kobari petanque courts. Three of our club members attended the event who were Junko, Noriko & our new member Saiko chan. Teams were made up on the day and several games of triples were played. According to Junko there were 14 players and 5 teams and Noriko's team came 1st and Junko's team came 2nd in the tournament. By the looks of the photos the weather was ok and they had a great time.

【１０月１８日の小針でのトリプルス・トーナメントのリポート】
みなさん、こんにちは。

私はつい先ほど、１０月１８日の日曜日に小針ペタンクコートで開催されたトリプルストーナメントのリポートを受け取りました。私達のクラブからはジュンコさん、ノリコさんと新メンバーのサイコさんが参加しました。チーム編成は当日行われ、トリプルスのゲームが数試合行われました。ジュンコさんによれば１４人のプレーヤーが参加し、トーナメントではノリコさんのチームが１位、ジュンコさんのチームが2位になったそうです。写真を見ると天気も良くて楽しい時間を過ごしたようです。

ＮＣＰから参加した女性陣は大健闘でしたね。

Oct 4th Club singles tournament - final

As you can see from the last blog posting there were 3 semi finals so to decide the winner we played 2 more games and listed below are the results from those games.
【１０月４日のクラブ・シングルストーナメントのリポート：決勝】
直前のブログを見れば分かるように準決勝は３試合が行われました。そこで優勝者を決めるためにもう２試合を行うことにしました。下記はそれらの試合結果です。

As Brian had won both of his final matches he was declared the 2009 Club singles champion. It must be noted that this was Brian's 3rd year in a row winning our club singles tournament and even though he has been beaten by a few of our club members in friendly games he has never been beaten in a singles tournament as yet. His skills on the piste are outstanding even with a beer in his hand it doesn't seem to affect his accuracy in shooting or pointing - well done Brian.
どちらの決勝戦もブライアンが勝利したので、ブライアンが私達の２００９クラブ・シングルス・チャンピオンとなりました。ブライアンは親善試合ではクラブメンバーの２，３人に時々負けることはありますが、彼のこの勝利は私達のクラブ・シングルス・トーナメントにおける３年連続の勝利であることは特筆すべきことです。片手にビールを持っている時でさえもピストにおける彼の技術は飛びぬけたもので、シューティングや“寄せ”における正確さに何の影響も与えないように見えます。ブライアン、お見事でした！

And after the final game was over we gathered for a group photo and opened a magnum of beer - Anchor Christmas Ale from San Francisco courtesy of Minagawa san who had given us the bottle a few weeks previous. Thank you very much Minagawa san as the beer was the perfect way to celebrate the last club tournament of the year.
決勝戦終了後に集合写真のために集まってサンフランシスコのAnchor Christmas Aleというビールのマグナム瓶を開けました。これはミナガワさんの好意によるもので数週間前にいただいたものです。今年最後のクラブ・トーナメントを祝うにはぴったりでした。ミナガワさん、本当にありがとうございました。

Luckily for us we had great weather on Sunday even though it had been raining hard throughout the week the piste was nice and dry and quite hard which made a fast surface to play upon.

Oct 4th Club singles tournament report - round 1

First I'd like to say thank you to everybody who came along on Sunday to take part in our club singles tournament and it was great to see so many players. Also I'm sorry that the location was changed on the day as when I arrived at the other location near the beach there were two games of baseball in progress and not knowing what time they were due to finish I decided to move the tournament back to our home ground at Nishi Ohata park. Not long after 1.30pm we we started the tournament and we drew sticks with numbers written on them to decide who we were to play, the numbers sticks were provided by Mr Suzuki of the Kobari petanque club who joined us in the tournament.

【１０月４日のクラブ・シングルス・トーナメントのリポート：一回戦】
私はまず最初に、日曜日に私達のクラブ・シングルス・トーナメントに参加するためにやって来てくれた皆さんにお礼を言いたいと思います。沢山の人達が参加してくれてとても良かったです。また、当日になって会場が変更になったことは大変申し訳なかったです。海岸近くの当初予定した会場に私が到着した時にはにいつ終わるとも分からない野球の試合が２試合進行中だったので、会場を私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園に戻すことにしたのです。午後１時半を回って間もない頃にはトーナメントを開始しました。私達は対戦相手を決めるクジ引きをしましたが、クジは当日のトーナメントに参加した“小針ペタンククラブ”の鈴木さんが用意してくれました。

下記は一回戦の試合結果です。

Hi Everybody

I recently received a couple of photos from our last practice day that was held on Sept 20th ( Thanks Sunil ) and according to a report I heard, Minagawa san & Chad showed up to play some petanque and they played a close game of doubles with one of the teams beating their opponents by a point or two. Also a reminder that our last club tournament for the year - The club singles tournament will be held on Oct 4th from 1pm - see the previous posting for more details. So if you are free please come along for an afternoon of petanque.

【９月２０日の練習日の写真】みなさん、こんにちは。

先日、私は９月20日に開催された前回の練習日の写真を受け取りました（スニル、ありがとう）。そして彼の報告によれば、練習日には皆川さんとチャドが参加して１点、２点を争うダブルスのシーソーゲームを演じたそうです。また、私達のクラブの今年最後のトーナメント“クラブ・シングルストーナメント”が１０月４日午後１時から開催されることを忘れないでください。詳細は前回の投稿を見てください。時間のある方は午後の時間をペタンクで楽しみにやって来てください。

Well as you know we have had a lot of rain in the last few days and because of that the Niigata open tournament was cancelled, it was to be held at the Kobari baseball ground but as I was in the area for lunch today I drove by the petanque grounds and it was covered in surface water so even though the weather cleared up later in the day it would have been impossiable to play on such a wet surface.

みなさん、こんにちは。

みなさんご存知のようにここ数日間雨が降り続いたおかげで“新潟オープントーナメント”は中止となってしまいました。小針野球場で開催される予定だったんですが、今日のお昼ごろその近辺にいた私は車で立ち寄って見ましたが、グラウンドの表面が水で覆われていて、後で晴れたとしてもとてもプレーができるような状態ではありませんでした。

I have just up dated the club event list and as you can see the next main event will be our annual club singles tournament, which is usually held at our home ground at Nishi ohata park, but at our BBQ party held in August we discovered a great spot for playing petanque so I have decided to hold our singles tournament there on Oct the 4th. The good points about this location are the large free car park ( no closing time ) toilets, and a great surface for petanque. Everybody who attended our BBQ party will remember that parking was a problem that day only because it was a public holiday and I'm sure that on the 4th there will be plenty of free parking available.
先ほどクラブ・イベントリストを更新したところですが、ご覧になれば分かるように、次の主要なイベントは毎年恒例のクラブ・シングルス・トーナメントです。このトーナメントは通常は私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園で開催されていたものですが、８月に開催したバーベキュー・パーティーでペタンクのプレーに絶好の場所を発見したので、そこで１０月４日の私達のシングルス・トーナメントを開催することにしたのです。この場所の良い点は、大きな無料駐車場（閉鎖時間はありません）があり、トイレがあり、会場の表面がペタンクにとっては絶好のコンディションであることです。バーベキューパーティーに参加した人達は皆その日の駐車場が大変な状態だったことを覚えているでしょうが、それは海水浴シーズンの休日だったからです。１０月４日は間違いなく十分な駐車スペースがあると思いますよ。

Hi Everyone

First I'd like to thank everybody who showed up at Nishi ohata park last Sunday and if you didn't you missed a great day as apart from our regular club members, 13 students from France & Korea who are currently studying Japanese at one of the local colleges came along to play petanque. After a few informal introductions we started a couple of games and because we didn't have enough sets of boules we just shared them so everyone could get a turn. The students from France of course knew how to play the game and some close scores were had and we witnessed some fine shooting as well. I think in total there were about 25 people on the court by mid afternoon and it was nice to be able to host some local students who are only in town for a month studying. After finishing up around 5.30pm a group of us headed downtown to The Local a New Zealand bar / restaurant where we celebrated Junko's ( 24th ? ) birthday with dinner & drinks followed by a fantastic blueberry & fig cream cake that one of our new members had made.

みなさん、こんにちは。

私はまず最初に、先日の日曜日に西大畑公園にやって来てくれたすべての人達に感謝したいと思います。私達のクラブのレギュラーメンバー以外に、フランスや韓国出身で現在は地元の大学で日本語を勉強している学生達が１３人もペタンクをするためにやって来てくれたんですからから、当日やって来なかった人達は素晴らしい１日を楽しみそこないましたね。ペタンクについて簡単に説明した後で、２，３のゲームを始めました。ブールのセットが足りなかったので、ブールを共有して皆に順番がくるようにしました。フランス出身の学生はもちろんペタンクのやり方を知っていました。接戦もありましたし、もちろん素晴らしいショットも見られました。今思うと午後の中頃には２５人位の人たちがコートにいましたし、１カ月の間町にいて勉強ばかりしていた学生達をもてなすことができたことを私は嬉しく思います。夕方５時半頃にはゲームを終えて私達の内の何人かは街中のニュージーランド・バー＆レストラン「ザ・ローカル」へ向かいました。そこで私達は食事と飲み物をいただいてジュンコさんの（２４回目？）の誕生日のお祝いをしました。最後には私達の新しいメンバーの１人の手作りのブルーベリーとイチジクのクリームケーキを食べました。

Also to those players who have entered the Niigata Open which is to be held at the Kobari baseball park on Sept Sunday the 13th good luck and I look forward to seeing you next weekend and if you are not entered in the tournament and have free time why don't you drop by and check it out. The petanque courts are located inside the main grounds on the left hand side of the baseball stadium.

また、９月１３日の日曜日に小針野球場で開催される“新潟オープン”にエントリーしているプレーヤー達には幸運を祈りますし、当日お会いするのを楽しみにしています。トーナメントにエントリーしていない人で時間のある人はどうぞ立ち寄って観戦してください。会場のペタンクコートは野球場左側のメイングラウンドの中にあります。

Missing boules

Club BBQ report

Hi Everyone

First I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to our club BBQ last Sunday and we had a great turn with almost 20 people showing up throughout the day. Also thanks a lot to Brian & Ken who brought along their BBQs which allowed us to cook up some great food. Apart from chatting, drinking & eating we managed to play a few games of doubles & triples on the adjacent baseball Field which was perfect for petanque and maybe in the future we may use this location for a tournament as there is a large free car park nearby & toilets. I think with the success of last Sunday's club BBQ we'll definitely be using this spot again in the future. Pictured above are some photos that were taken at the BBQ.

Also please remember if you are interested in putting together a triples team for the up coming Niigata Open entries must be received by Sept the 3rd, just contact me and I'll make sure your team is entered for the tournament.

みなさん、こんにちは。

私はまず最初に、先日の日曜日に私達の“クラブＢＢＱ”にやって来てくれた人みんなに声を大にしてありがとうと言いたいと思います。その日は結局は２０人近くの人が参加するという素晴らしい結果となりました。私はまた、バーベキューを持って来てくれたブライアンとケンにありがとうと言いたいと思います。おかげで私達はバーベキューで美味しい食べ物を料理することができました。お喋りをしたり飲んだり食べたりはもちろんのこと、隣接した野球場でダブルスやトリプルスのゲームを楽しむこともできました。その場所はペタンクには絶好で広大な無料駐車場が近くにあり、トイレもあるので将来はトーナメントの会場としても使えそうです。先日の日曜日の“クラブＢＢＱ”が大成功だったので、この場所は将来必ず使うと思いますよ。上の写真はそのバーベキューの日に撮った写真です。

ところで、来る“新潟オープン”にトリプルス・チームとして参加したい方は、参加申し込みの締め切りが９月３日であることをお忘れなく！私に連絡してくれれば私があなた達のチームがトーナメントに参加できるように手配しますよ。

Niigata open petanque tournament

Hi Everyone

Well we have just received the Niigata Open petanque tournament info from Mr Suzuki of the Niigata Petanque club whose home ground is based at the Kobari baseball stadium. And like early this year they are holding the Niigata Open at their home ground again. This triples tournament is played twice throughout the year and attracts members from the various clubs located in the Niigata city area. Last time our club entered two teams and one of them advanced to the final to be placed second in the tournament which was a grand effort for our first appearance. So if you have never played in a local tournament here's your chance and it's a great way to meet other petanque players from around Niigata, last time there was over 20 teams in the tournament. It is a very well organised tournament and starts at 9am so you would need to be there at 8.30am to collect your teams tournament schedule. If you are interested in putting together a triples team please contact me and then we will register our entries as all entries must be received before the closing date of September the 3rd. 【新潟オープン・ペタンクトーナメント】
みなさん、こんにちは。

小針野球場近くにホームグラウンドを構える新潟ペタンク・クラブの鈴木さんから新潟オープン・ペタンクトーナメントについて連絡がありました。今年早い頃の大会と同様に、今回も新潟オープンは彼らのホームグラウンドで開催されます。このトリプルス・トーナメントは新潟地区に存在する様々なクラブのメンバー達の参加を得て年に２回開催されます。前回は私達のクラブからは２チームが参加し、そのうちの１チームは決勝戦まで勝ち進み準優勝となりました。初参加としては私達は大奮闘しました。地元のトーナメントに参加した経験のない人にとっては絶好のチャンスです。前回は２０チーム以上の参加がありましたので、新潟近辺から参加する他のペタンクプレーヤー達と知り合う素晴らしい機会となります。この大会は非常に念入りに計画されたトーナメントで、午前９時から開始されるのでトーナメントのスケジュールを受け取るためには午前８時３０分には会場にいる必要があります。トリプルス・チームに参加することに興味がある方は私に連絡してください。参加申し込みの締め切りは９月３日ですので、それまでに私達のクラブからの参加者を取りまとめて申し込みをします。前回の様子を見たい方はこのブログの一番上の右側のコーナーのスライドショーをチェックして見てください。

Well for a long time we have been talking about getting some club clothing printed and after checking out Cafepress.com I decided to set up a NCP clothing store where you can purchase club clothing online. If you check out the clothing store on the right hand side of the blog you can click on the links and it will send you to the online store where you can then choose your size before placing an order. I have a shirt from Cafepress.com ( Thanks Minagawa san ) and the quality is very good and being an American online store they even have the bigger sizes that some of us may need. August 2nd club day meet

Today a small group of players showed up at our home ground of Nishi Ohata park and we had enough members to play several doubles & triples throughout the afternoon. The weather was a little cooler but quite humid and the few spits of rain later in the afternoon didn't put a stop to play and everybody had a great time. We also discussed the up coming Club BBQ and here's hoping for some fine weather for the 16th. If you're free please come along and enjoy some petanque, drinks and of course the BBQ.

【８月２日のクラブ例会のリポート】
今日の午後、私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園に姿を見せたのは少人数のプレーヤーだけでしたが、ダブルスやトリプルスのゲームを楽しむのには十分でした。天気は少し涼しいくらいでしたが湿気が強くて、午後遅くには小雨がパラパラと降りました。それでもプレーを中断するほどではなくて、私達は楽しいひと時を過ごしました。私達はまた、来たる“クラブ・バーベキュー”についても話し合いましたが、１６日には晴れて欲しいねということになりました。もし時間があれば皆さんどうぞやって来てペタンクや飲み物、そしてもちろんバーキューも楽しんでください。

Niigata City petanque - Summer BBQ

Hi Everybody

This year we have decided to hold a Summer BBQ party at Hiyoriyama beach. The reason we are holding it there and not at our home ground at Nishi Ohata park is that you are not supposed to have BBQ in Nishi Ohata park so rather than getting in trouble from the local police we have picked the location above.

The BBQ will be held on August the 16th at the location above. If you are coming by bus it's a 10 min walk from " Yoko Shichi Bancho Nichome " there is also plenty of car parking for those who are driving there and as we currently only have one very small BBQ if you happen to have another BBQ please bring it along.

I will try to get there early ( Before 11am ) and set up under the covered shade area if it's not already taken. It's a BYO event - which means Bring Your Own food & drink, just bring along anything you want. There is also plenty of space at that area so we should be able to have a few games of petanque in between eating and drinking. If you are free please come along and if you know someone else who would like to come please invite them as well.

【新潟市ペタンク・クラブのサマー・バーベキュー会】

今年は、私達は日和山海岸で夏のバーベキュー会を開催することにしました。私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園ではなく上記の会場で開催する理由は次の通りです。西大畑公園でのバーベキューは許可されていないのです。従って近くの交番とトラブルになるよりはということで上記の場所を選んだのです。

バーベキュー会は８月１６日に上記の場所で開催されます。もしバスでやって来るのであれば“横七番町２丁目”からは徒歩１０分ですし、車でやって来る人用の駐車場も十分なスペースがあります。今のところ私たちには小さいバーベキューがひとつしかありませんので、もしバーベキューをお持ちでしたらどうぞ持って来てください。都合がつく方はどうぞやって来てください。もし誰か来たい人がいたらどうぞ招待してください。

July 19th meet report

Unfortunately the weather was very bad for our open peiste day at Nishi ohata park which forced 7 members to play at our wet weather spot under the bridge. We have decided to try holding the open peiste event for beginners at a later day when the weather is more settled and the rain season has finished. Today under the cover of the bridge we were able to play some closely fought games of doubles & triples and and I'd like to thank the members who braved the terrible weather to play some petanque. I only hope the weather has improved for our next scheduled club day which is August the 2nd.

【７月１９日の例会リポート】
残念なことに、非常な悪天候のために西大畑公園で“公開ピスト・デー”を開催することはできず、７人のメンバーは橋の下の私達の雨天用の場所でプレーをすることになりました。初心者のための“公開ピスト”イベントについては、天候がもっと落ち着いて梅雨が明けた後に開催することにしました。今日のような天気でも橋の下の雨天用の会場ではプレーが可能で、接戦のダブルスやトリプルスを楽しむことができました。ペタンクをするためにはこんなひどい天気をものともしないメンバー達に私は感謝したいと思います。８月２日に予定されている次のクラブ例会には天気が良くなっていることを願うだけですね。

Niigata City petanque club is an informal petanque club that meets at Nishi Ohata park on the 1st & 3rd Sunday of every month for friendly games of petanque, our club is made up of all ages and many different nationalities. If you are free on the 19th why don't you come along and have a go at petanque. Niigata City petanque members will be on hand to teach you how to play and answer any questions you might have. There is no cost at all and we will be able to lend you some boules on the day that you can use.

Bastille day event part 2

While we were playing petanque there was a local festival going on in the park as well and at the start there were a few local bands playing various covers of English songs and then some traditional japanese music as well. Later in the day a large crowed had formed as it was the end point for a small parade.

【バスティーユ・デイ・イベントのリポート（第２報）】

私達がペタンクをしている間、同じ公園内では地元のお祭りが開催されていたんですが、そのうち地元の音楽隊によるイギリスの曲の演奏が始まり、次にはもちろん日本の伝統音楽も演奏されました。そこがパレードの終着点になっていたために夕方には大変な人混みになってしまいました。

Bastille day event report

Hi Everyone

Well instead of holding our triples tournament, we decided on the day just to play some friendly matches instead. By the end of the day we had about 12 players and throughout the afternoon we enjoyed several matches of triples & doubles. Even though it was rather hot the games we played were of a high level and some outstanding shots were seen as well. Thanks to Sunil we were also able to partake in some plum liqueur & Japanese rice wine, although the plum liqueur was consumed quicker as it tasted great with some nice cool water. Around the middle of the afternoon Minagawa san and his friend Tomoko showed up after having driven from 2.5 hours from Gumma and then the both of them joined in a few games as well.

【バスティーユ・デー・イベントのリポート】

みなさん、こんにちは。

その日はトリプルス・トーナメントを開催する予定でしたが、代わりに私達は親善ゲームをすることにしました。終わり頃にはおよそ１２人ほどのプレーヤーがいて、私達はトリプルスやダブルスのゲームで午後のひと時を楽しみました。暑い日だったんですが、ハイレベルのゲームが繰り広げられて、目を見張るようなショットもいくつか見られました。スニルのおかげで私達はプラム・リキュールや日本の米ワインを楽しむことが出来ましが、プラム・リキュールは冷たい水で割ると非常に美味しくてあっと言う間に飲み尽くされてしまいました。午後もだいぶ過ぎた頃、皆川さんが友達のトモコさんと姿を見せました。群馬から２時間半も車を運転して来てくれたんですが、二人とも２，３ゲームに参加して楽しんでいました。

Hi Everyone

Well it's that time of year again, for those of you who attended last years Bastille day triples tournament you will remember we had a lot of fun, as there was plenty of wine, pastis, and great food and in between the drinking and eating we even managed to play some petanque. It's a very informal tournament so just show up and we make up some teams on the day, as soon as we have the 1st two teams on the court we'll start playing and if you happen to arrive later you can just make up a team and join in.

【バスティーユ・デイ・トリプルス・トーナメント】

みなさん、こんにちは。

いよいよ、今年もバスティーユ・デイの時期になりましたね。去年のバスティーユ・デイ・トリプルス・トーナメントに参加した人達は沢山のワイン、パスティス（アニスの種子を原料としたフランスのリキュール）や食べ物があり大変楽しかったことを覚えていますよね。飲んだり食べたりの合間にはペタンクも楽しみましたね。これは単なる内輪のトーナメントですので、当日やって来た順にチームを組んで、最初の２チームが出来たら直ぐにゲーム開始となります。遅れて参加の場合でも直ぐにチームを組んで参加することが出来ますよ。

５日に皆さんとお会いするのを楽しみにしています。

As Minagawa san came up to Niigata for a party last Sunday we decided to play a few games of petanque in a small local park, the weather was awesome and and Brian was able to join us as well & after a slow start by Minagawa san ( I promised him I would not mention the outcome of our 1st game ) he played very well. As you can see by the photos it was a prefect place for some petanque as we had plenty of shade under the trees.

【ペタンクの練習】

先日の日曜日には皆川さんが或るパーティー参加のために新潟へやって来たので、鄙びた公園でペタンクを２，３ゲームやろうということになりました。天気は素晴らしかったし、もちろんブライアンも参加することができました。皆川さんは最初は本調子ではありませんでしたが（私は、最初のゲーム結果については誰にも言わないと彼に約束しました）、その後は素晴らしいプレーをしました。写真を見れば分かるように、その公園は木々の下に日陰もたっぷりとあってペタンクをするには絶好の場所でした。

Hi Everyone

Well as we did not have enough teams for a mixed doubles tournament we decided to just have a few doubles and triples instead. Also it was the best turn out of players we have had so far this year with some players showing up who we had not seen in a while due to busy work schedules or job transfers etc. Throughout the afternoon it was nice and sunny and perfect for petanque and with so many people around it was easy to get a game going. Some great shots were played on the hard packed clay of the park and at first it took everyone some time to get used to the rock hard surface as the boules would just roll too far most of the time. Also it was our clubs two year anniversary as well, a lot has happened in the two years since a few of us got together in the park for a few casual games of petanque. We now have around 20 members and have held many club tournaments and events which have also attracted new players to the sport as well, we went to Tokyo last year and played a friendly tournament against the well known Aoyama club which was great fun and we learned a lot from playing against them as well. Most recently 6 of our members took part for the 1st time in the Niigata Open ( Triples tournament ) and one team was placed 2nd overall. So if you know of anyone who may be interested in petanque please tell them to come along anytime.

みなさん、こんにちは。

当初は混合ダブルス・トーナメントを行うにはチーム数が足りなかったので、代わりに単なるダブルスとトリプルスのゲームをしようということになりました。ところがその後は、今年これまでで最高の展開となりました。仕事の予定が立て込んでいたり、転勤などのためにしばらく会うことがなかった何人かのメンバー達が姿を見せたのです。その日の午後はポカポカとした好天気で絶好のペタンク日和でしたし、多くの人達がいたので簡単にゲームを段取ることができました。公園の粘土質の土はカチカチに固くなっていたにも関わらず素晴らしいショットもいくつかありましたが、最初は硬い岩のような表面でほとんどの場合ブールが転がり過ぎていました。当日は私達のクラブの２周年記念日でもありました。私達のほんの数人が公園に集まって肩肘張らないペタンクを楽しむようになってからのこの２年間には沢山のことがありました。今や私達は２０人ほどのメンバーを有し、クラブ・トーナメントや新しいメンバーを勧誘するイベントなどを沢山開催するようになりました。昨年は東京へ遠征し、有名な“青山クラブ”と親善トーナメントを行いました。
それは大変楽しかったし、彼らとの対戦から私達は多くのことを学びもしました。最も最近では、私達のメンバーから６人が初めて“新潟オープン（トリプルス・トーナメント）”に参加し、うち１チームは２位に入賞しました。こんな風なので、もしペタンクに興味がありそうな人をご存知でしたら、どうぞいつでも構わないのでやって来るように言ってください。

Well first of all I would like to thank Mr Suzuki of the Niigata petanque club for organizing a fantastic triples tournament last Sunday, it was the first time that the Niigata city petanque club had entered a local tournament and we all had a great time.

【新潟オープン・ペタンク・トーナメントの報告】
私はまず最初に、先日の日曜日に素晴らしいトリプルス・トーナメントを計画してくれた“新潟ペタンク・クラブ”の鈴木さんにお礼を言いたいと思います。“The Niigata city petanque club”が地元のトーナメントに参加するのは今回が初めてであり、私たちはみな非常に楽しい時を過ごしました。

Tournament format - Triples played to 9 points
トーナメントの形式は、9ポイント制のトリプルスです。

After rising early on Sunday morning and finding it raining I thought the tournament would have been canceled due to the bad weather, but after a phone call from Junko who told me the tournament was going to be held I quickly left home to collect my team mate Brian and we then drove to the Kobari baseball park where the Niigata petanque club has their home ground. Upon arriving there were already many other players there from the following clubs

日曜日の朝早く起きて雨が降っているのを見た時には、私は悪天候のためトーナメントは中止になったと思いました。しかし、ジュンコさんからの電話でトーナメントが開催されることを聞くと直ぐに、私はチームメイトのブライアンを迎えに行くために自宅を出発しました。その後、私たちは“新潟ペタンク・クラブ”がホーム・グラウンドを有する小針野球場に車で向かいました。私たちが到着した時には、以下のクラブから参加した多くのプレーヤー達がいました。

After a few phone calls we managed to inform the 3rd member of our team Takeishi who like us has presumed the tournament was canceled but shortly after he made it to the tournament in time for the opening ceremony.

あちこちへ何回か電話した後で私たちは、私たちと同様にトーナメントは中止になったと思っていた私たちのチームの３番目のメンバーである“タケイシさん”に連絡を取ることができました。ほどなくして彼はトーナメントにやって来て、開会式にも間に合いました。

“Niigata City petanque club”を代表してトーナメントに参加したのは以下のプレーヤー達です。

チーム名/ “Uzu Ko” –ジュンコ、ノリコ、アヤコ

チーム名/ “Peisty Boys” –ブライアン、ドン、タケイシ

After a welcome ceremony the 1st round of games were started, in all there were 21 teams taking part in the triples tournament and six courts were marked out and numbered, every team received a 2 page tournament schedule telling you who you were playing and on which court your game was to be played etc. Our team Uzu ko started off very well winning their first two games but unfortunately lost their 3rd game which meant they could not advance to the 2nd round, but in between playing I was able to watch team Uzu ko play and they did very well placing some fantastic shots.

歓迎式の後、いよいよ第１ラウンドのゲームが始まりました。総勢２１チームがこのトリプルス・トーナメントに参加していました。６面のコートが線引きされて番号を振られており、すべてのチームには２ページに渡るトーナメント・スケジュールが配布されてどのコートでどのチームと対戦するのかなどが分かるようになっていました。我がクラブのチーム“Uzu Ko”は最初の２ゲームを連取して非常に順調な滑り出しでしたが、残念なことに３ゲーム目に敗れて第２ラウンドに進むことはできませんでした。私は競技の合間にチーム“Uzu Ko”のプレーを見ることができましたが、彼女達はいくつかの非常に素晴らしいショットを放っていました。

Team Peisty boys managed to win the 1st 2 games rather easily but we almost lost to a team on our 3rd game due to them getting a big lead on us, after winning our 3 matches it placed us in the 2nd round which took place after lunch. Before lunch the light rain had eased off and some patches of the peiste had dried out but overall the peiste was damp and rather slow which made pointing very difficult as the boules were not rolling very far at all. After the lunch break the 2nd round games were decided and then we continued playing, the level of competition had increased and we faced some very good players from the Niigata petanque club but managed to win by a reasonable lead. After that the Peisty boys advanced to the semi final where we faced off with another Niigata team who had also not lost any of their games that day. They were very good and it was a hard fought game advancing one point or so at each end. On the last end it was even 8-8 and it could have gone either way , it was a very tense match with many of the other teams who had finished lining the peiste to check out who would advance to the final. In the end we managed to pull off a final shot which won the game so we could advance to the final.

チーム“Peisty boys”は最初の２ゲームを難なく勝ち進みましたが、３ゲーム目は対戦相手に大きなリードを許してしまい危うく負けるところでした。３ゲームに勝利して私達は昼食後の第２ラウンドに駒を進めました。昼食の前には小雨も上がりピストの所々は乾きましたが、ピスト全体は湿ったままで“遅い”状態だったために標的への寄せを非常に難しくしていました。ブールがとにかく転がり難かったのです。昼食休憩の後、第２ラウンドの組み合わせが決定されて私たちはプレーを続行しました。競技のレベルが上がって、私たちは“新潟ペタンク・クラブ”の優れたプレーヤー達と対戦することになりましたが、何とかリードを保って勝利することができました。その後、“Peisty boys”は準決勝へと勝ち進み、その日はまだ負け知らずのもう一つの新潟のチームと対戦することになりました。
彼らは大変上手で、そのゲームは１点を争う非常に困難なものとなりました。とうとう最後には８対８の同点となり、どちらへ転んでもおかしくない状況でした。すでにゲームを終了した他のチームの多くの人達がピストを取り囲んで“どちらが決勝に勝ち進むのだろうか？”と見守る中で非常に緊迫したゲームが行われました。結局は、最後のショットを何とか決めた私達が決勝戦へ勝ち進むことができました。

I must say that competitive petanque can be very nerve wracking and with so many people watching I was certainly nervous but elated that our team had advanced so far. The final match attracted a vast number of spectators lining the entire peiste and we faced off against a team of 3 men from Tagami after winning 5 games we were rather tired but tried our best against the Tagami team, but their pointing skills were outstanding and they quickly had a large lead on us in the 1st two ends. I think the final score was 9 - 3 with the Tagami team winning the tournament.

競技ペタンクは神経をすり減らすものであると言わざるを得ません。多くの見物人がいて私は明らかに神経質になっていましたが、自分たちのチームがここまで勝ち進んだことには大いに元気づけられました。決勝戦はピスト全体を取り囲むほどの非常に多くの観客を引き付けました。私達は田上から参加した３人の男性チームと対戦しました。５ゲームを勝ち抜いた後でやや疲れてはいましたが、私達は田上チームに対してベストを尽くしました。しかし、標的へ寄せる彼らの技術は傑出しており、彼らは最初の２エンドで大きなリードを獲得しました。最終的なスコアは田上チームの勝利となる９対３のスコアだったと思います。

We were presented with the 2nd prize which were some book vouchers and overall had a fantastic day and were very pleased to have done so well at our 1st local tournament.

私達は準優勝の賞品として図書券を贈呈されました。素晴らしい１日を過ごすことができたし、初めての“地元のトーナメント”で成果を上げることができて大変うれしく思いました。

At the prize giving it was mentioned that there will be a similar tournament to be held in September of this year so I hope Niigata City petanque club can enter a few more teams for that tournament.

表彰式では“同様なトーナメントが今年９月に開催される”旨の案内がありました。そのトーナメントへは“Niigata City petanque club”からさらに２、３のチームが参加できるといいですね。

Thank you to everyone from Niigata City petanque club that took part as it was a great day out and I hope to see you all at our mixed doubles club tournament on Sunday the 7th which is also our clubs 2 year anniversary

The boules are in good condition and are about a year old and because they are heavy they are most suitable for pointing rather than shooting etc. Included in the price is the carry bag that came with them plus one wooden cochonnet.

ブールのコンディションは良好でおよそ１年の使用品です。重いブールなのでシューティングよりも転がして寄せるのに最も適しています。価格には付属の専用キャリーバッグと木製の標的が１個含まれています。

May 17th practice day report

Well as luck would have it, it rained rather hard on Sunday which forced the petanque club to use our wet weather spot under the bridge. Much to my surprise there were already quite a few people there practicing when I showed up with Brian a little later than normal. But once there a game of triples got underway and were were also able to confirm our teams for the Niigata ken triples tournament to be held at the Kobari petanque club grounds ( next to the baseball stadium ) on the 31st. Our club has entered the following two teams.

日曜日にはかなり強く雨が降っていたので、私たちのペタンク・クラブは橋の下の雨天用の場所を使わなければなりませんでした。驚いたことに、私とブライアンが定時よりも少し遅く雨天用の会場へ到着した時にはすでに何人かの人たちが練習をしていました。ひとたびトリプルス・ゲームが始まると、私たちは３１日に“小針ペタンク・クラブ”のグラウンド（小針野球場の隣）で開催される“新潟県トリプルス・トーナメント”に向けて私たちのチームを強化することができました。私たちのクラブは次の２チームがエントリーしています。

Niigata Ken Triples tournament May 31st

Hi Everyone

At our last club meet 3 of the Kobari petanque club members were at Nishi Ohata park and they informed us of the up coming Niigata ken triples tournament which will be held at their ground beside the Kobari baseball park on Sunday May the 31st.

The event is open to all petanque players in Niigata ken and teams must be registered by the 20th of May to be eligible to take part in the tournament.

Event type - Triples tournament

Cost - 500 yen per person , Deluxe lunch box if needed 700 yen

Location - Kobari petanque club grounds located beside the Kobari baseball park

Time - Tournament starts at 9am

All games will be played to 9 points due to the number of teams that have entered & so far NCP has entered two teams. If you are interested in joining the tournament please e mail me as soon as possible with your Team name & the members who will be in your team. You can contact me at premopies@yahoo.com

May 3rd meet

Well as it was the Golden week holiday I did not expect many people to show up for petanque as most people travel outside the prefecture or have other plans, but to my surprise they were quite a few people at the park when Brian & I arrived after 1.30pm and it was nice to see 3 of the Kobari petanque club members enjoying a game at our peiste as well. As I had work in the morning and had been up very early I did not stay the entire afternoon but enjoyed a few games of doubles & triples, the peiste was very hard due to the hot weather we have had recently and the boules were rolling very easy ,often too far.

Also the Kobari petanque club members informed us of an up coming triples tournament on May 31st , See the next post for more info

April the 19th Club Doubles tournament

Hi Everybody

First of all I would like to thank everyone who came along for the doubles tournament on Sunday, we had hoped to start the tournament at 12pm but due to lack of numbers we had to wait until around 1pm before teams were drawn and the playing commenced. Overall it was a great tournament and even though there were only 4 teams competing it was a lot of fun. The peiste was rather hard and because of that very little energy was needed in pointing etc as more often than not the boules would roll further than expected.

【４月１９日のクラブ・ダブルストーナメント】
皆さん、こんにちは。
まず最初に、私は日曜日にダブルストーナメントのためにやって来てくれたすべての人達に感謝したいと思います。１２時には始めたいと思っていましたが、参加者不足のためにくじ引きをしてプレーが始まるまで１時頃まで待たなければなりませんでした。全体としては素晴らしいトーナメントでした。４チームの参加しかありませんでしたが、非常に楽しかったですよ。ピストはやや硬くて、ブールが予想以上に遠くへ転がってしまわないようにするために投球にはほんの少しの力しか必要とされませんでした。

As you can see from the results a new player joined Brian in the final, the reason for this was that Akiko who had been Brians team mate for the tournament had to leave early to go to work so Noriko Uehara a new member who came along to petanque for the 1st time was picked by Akiko as a substitute. As it turned out Noriko played very well for a beginner and placed some outstanding shots to lead their team to victory. At the start of the game Russell & Don were in the lead but not long after the points were even all the way until the last end when Brian & Noriko scored 3 points to take the game.

結果を見れば分かるように、決勝では新しいプレーヤーがブライアンとコンビを組んでいます。その理由は、それまでブライアンのチームメイトだったアキコさんが仕事のために早めに引き上げなければならかったからです。そのため初めてペタンクにやって来たウエハラ・ノリコさんにアキコさんの代役として白羽の矢が立ったのです。結果として、ノリコさんは初心者としては非常に上手にプレーしましたし、自分達のチームを勝利へと導く素晴らしいショットもありました。決勝戦の序盤ではラッセルとドンのチームがリードしていましたが、ほどなく同点となりそそ状態がブライアンとノリコさんのチームが一挙に３点得点して勝利を決める最後の最後まで続きました。

Once again I would like to thank everybody who came along for a great afternoon of petanque and even though we only have a few tournaments a year they are a lot of fun. As you can see from the event list the next tournament will be our mixed doubles tournament on June the 7th and its also our clubs 2 year anniversary as well so the tournament will probably be followed by a dinner party.

　私は再度、先日やって来てペタンクで午後のひと時を一緒に楽しんだすべての人達にお礼を言いたいと思います。私達は年間を通してほんの数回のトーナメントしか開催しませんが、いずれも大きな楽しみですね。イベントリストを見ると分かるように、私達の次のトーナメントは６月７日の混合ダブルストーナメントです。それはもちろん私達のクラブの２周年記念でもありますので、トーナメントの後にはディナーパーティを開催の予定です。

April the 12th

First I would like to apologize to any players who showed up at Nishi Ohata park on Sunday afternoon expecting to play as because of the cheery blossom the peiste was packed with people sitting around on blue sheets drinking & eating. I cycled by the park around mid day and took the photo above and it would have been impossible to play at that time of the day. But I have received a report from our French member Aurelien that he witnessed a few members playing petanque late in the afternoon. Hopefully there will be enough space for us to set up at least two peistes for our doubles tournament next Sunday.

私はまず最初に、プレーをしようと日曜日の午後に西大畑公園へやって来てくれたすべてのプレーヤー達にお詫びしたいと思います。というのはピストはブルーシートに座って飲んだり食べたりしている花見客でいっぱいでしたからね。私はお昼頃に自転車で公園を通りがかって上の写真を撮りましたが、当日その時点まではプレーするのは不可能のようでした。しかし私は私達のメンバーの一人であるフランス人のAurelienから午後の遅い時間に２，３人のメンバーがペタンクをプレーしているのを目撃したというレポートを受け取りました。願わくば、次の日曜日には私たちのダブルス・トーナメント用に少なくともふたつのピストを設えるだけのスペースがあって欲しいものです。

2009 Doubles tournament

Hi Everybody

Well first on the list of friendly tournaments this year is our doubles tournament which will be held on the 19th of April. Previous years players were able to choose their partner before the tournament , but now that we have a few less experienced players I thought it would be a better idea if teams were drawn on the day. The reason for doing this is that it will give everyone who takes part a chance of winning and makes a more evenly matched tournament. Please note the earlier starting time of 12pm and once we have enough teams the games will get underway. There will also be a score sheet placed on one of the benches and after your match is over please write your team names and the final score etc as this will decide the next round. This is a very informal doubles tournament and there is no prize money, trophies or trips to France for the winners , but you will have your efforts posted on the blog and you may get to join the list of previous years winners. Please feel free to bring along any food or drinks to sustain your energy levels throughout the tournament. If you have any questions re the tournament or would like to borrow a spare set of boules please contact me anytime.

【２００９ダブルストーナメント】
皆さん、こんにちは。
今年の親善トーナメントのリストの第一番は４月１９日に開催される私達のダブルストーナメントです。昨年は、プレーヤーはトーナメントの前に自分のパートナーを選ぶことができましたが、今回は経験未熟なプレーヤーが何人かいますので当日にくじ引きで決めるのが良い考えだと思われます。このようにする理由は、そうすることが参加者全員に勝利のチャンスを与えてより公平なトーナメントにするものだからです。開始時間が１２時といつもより早く、チーム数が揃えばゲームは開始されますので注意してください。ベンチのひとつにスコアシートを置きますので試合が終わったら自分のチーム名と確定スコアを書き込んでください。それを基に次の試合の組み合わせを決めます。これはとても内輪のダブルストーナメントなので勝利者への賞金もトロフィーもフランス旅行もありませんが、あなたの業績はこのブログに掲載され、あなたは年間勝利者リストに仲間入りすることになります。トーナメントの間のエネルギーレベルを維持するための食べ物や飲み物の持ち込みは自由です。このトーナメントに関する質問がある場合や予備のブール・セットを借りたい方はいつでも結構ですので私に連絡してください。

Now that the good weather is upon us and hopefully it will get even warmer soon I am wanting some feedback on what color we should use for our new club T shirts. We have talked about getting club T shirts made for quite some time and finally a while back we settled on the above design which several members approved of so now I would like to give everybody the chance to decide which color to have. 5th of April meet report

Well the good weather is finally here and that was proved over the weekend with some fantastic weather on Sunday and a good turnout of players. In all about 10 or so players showed up for several games of doubles & triples and we were also able to introduce the the game to a new player as well, thanks Yumiko for coming along and I hope you had a great time. If anyone would like to come along and have a go at petanque please just show up and introduce yourself and someone will lend you some boules to play with if you do not have your own set. Also a reminder to those who feel the need to practice before our doubles tournament on the 19th , there will be an informal practice day on the 12th. The doubles tournament this year is open to Niigata City petanque club members only and is an informal tournament with competitors drawing names from a hat to decide who their partner will be etc. So if you are keen to play in the tournament just come along on the day and put your name down to play. I will post further info on the doubles tournament soon.

【４月５日の例会リポート】
さて、とうとう天気の良い季節になりましたね。週末の日曜日もまさに素晴らしい天気でプレーヤー達の集まりも良かったです。全部で１０人ほどのプレーヤー達が姿を見せてダブルスやトリプルスを数ゲーム楽しみました。そして私達はペタンクというゲームを新しいプレーヤーに紹介することもできました。ユミコさん来てくれてありがとう。楽しんで貰えたら嬉しいです。やって来てペタンクを試してみたいと思う人はどうぞお出でください。そして自己紹介をしてください。ブールセットを持っていない人には誰かがブールをお貸ししますよ。また、１９日のダブルス・トーナメントの前に練習しなければと思っている人は１２日に非公式練習日があることを忘れないでくださいね。今年のダブルス・トーナメントに参加できるのはNiigata City petanque clubのメンバーだけですし、競技者が自分のパートナーを決めるために帽子から名前のくじをひいたりする非公式のトーナメントです。このダブルス・トーナメントに関する更なる情報は近日中にこのブログに掲載します。

15th of March meet report

Well as it cloudy and overcast we decided to play petanque at Nishi Ohata park which was ok for the 1st couple of hours until a short but heavy downpour of rain interrupted out triples match and turned the park into a watery bog. Prior to the rain we had a few games of doubles and introduced Russell an Australian and new member of NCP to the basics of petanque. He played very well for a first timer and he informed me that he had recently tried his hand at gate ball but found petanque much easier. Throughout the day some great games were played which were very close but it was also a day for unusual shots as well. The first spectacular shot was placed by Erik who was perfecting his high lob shots and in the middle of our triples match he placed a very high lob shot which came down directly on top of the cochonnet driving it deep into the soft piste which was rather funny - at least we knew it could not be moved. The other interesting shot was placed by Brian at our wet weather location under the bridge as in the middle of our triples match he placed a shot which hit the cochonnet and sent it right across a one lane road into the grass beyond a fence. The remaining games were played at our wet weather location under the bridge as after the downpour of rain at the park there was no way we could continue playing on such a wet piste. Pictured above are a few photos taken at both locations as well as the cochonnet that Erik hit with his high lob shot.

【３月１５日の例会のリポート】
どんよりとした曇り空でしたが、私達は西大畑公園でペタンクをすることにしました。最初の２，３時間は大丈夫でしたが、短時間の土砂降りの雨が私達のトリプルス・マッチを中断させて公園を水浸しの沼地のように変えてしまいました。雨の前に、私達はダブルスのゲームを２，３試合したりＮＣＰの新メンバーであるオーストラリア人のラッセルにペタンクの基本を紹介したりしました。彼は初めてにしては非常に上手にプレーをしました。そして彼は私に“最近、ゲートボールをしたことがあるけれど、ペタンクの方が取っ付き易い”と言いました。その日は非常に素晴らしい接戦のゲームがありましたし、同時に珍しいショットが見られた日でもありました。最初の傑作ショットは完璧なハイロブ・ショットを続けていたエリックのショットでした。トリプルス・マッチの中盤で彼は非常に高いハイロブ・ショットを放ちましたが、それがちょうどコシネの真上に落ちて可笑しいことにコシネを柔らかいピストの中に深くめり込ませてしまいました。コシネはもう決して動かすことができなくなっていました。もう一つの面白いショットは、橋の下の雨天用の会場で行われたトリプルス・マッチの中盤でのブライアンのショットでした。彼の放ったショットがコシネを直撃して、コシネはフェンスを飛び越えて道路を横切って草むらに飛び込んでしまいました。公園での土砂降りの雨の後ではそんな湿ったピストではプレーを続けることは到底できないので、残りのゲームは橋の下の雨天用の会場で行われました。上の写真は両方の会場で撮った何枚かの写真です。もちろん、エリックがハイロブ・ショットで直撃したコシネの写真もあります。

1st of March meet report

Well it was nice to see some sunny weather for a change even if it was a little cold, but even the slightly cold weather did not deter a good turnout of members for some friendly games at Nishi ohata park on Sunday. Also a reminder to those members who drive to petanque please park in the large car park next to the Art museum if its open as the parking warden at the Art museum gets a bit grumpy with petanque players parking in the smaller car park within the museum grounds. Several interesting games of doubles and triples were played throughout the day and several bottles of wine were also consumed throughout the afternoon adding to the friendly atmosphere. The temperature dropped rapidly later in the afternoon which made playing more difficult but it was great to see some members who had not been in a while and and some new players as well. Our next meet is an informal practice day on the 15th and from now on all the games will be held at Nishi Ohata park if fine. Pictured above are several photos that were taken last Sunday at Nishi Ohata park and if you know of anyone who may be interested in playing petanque please tell them to come along to our monthly petanque meets as there are a few sets of spare boules for beginners to use.

【３月１日の例会のリポート】
先日は少し寒かったのですが、それでも晴れた天気を見て気分転換になって嬉しかったですね。少し寒かったにもかかわらず多くのメンバー達が日曜日に西大畑公園での親善ゲームに来てくれました。ところでペタンクに車でやって来るメンバー達にひとつ注意してほしいことがあります。美術館の隣の大きい駐車場が開いている時はどうぞそちらへ駐車してください。なぜなら、美術館の駐車場監視員は敷地内の狭い方の駐車場に駐車するペタンク・プレーヤに対しては随分と気難しいからです。その日はダブルスやトリプルスのゲームを楽しみました。フレンドリーな雰囲気の中で午後の時間を過ごし、ワインのボトルも何本か空になりました。午後遅くなると気温が急に下がりプレーするのが難しくなりましたが、新顔のメンバーはもちろんのことしばらく姿を見せなかったメンバーに会えて良かったですね。私たちの次の例会は１５日の非公式練習日です。これからは晴れていれば西大畑公園で開催します。上の写真は先日の日曜日に西大畑公園で撮ったものです。誰かペタンクに興味がありそうな知り合いがいたら、どうず私達の毎月の例会にやって来るように話してください。ビギナー用の予備のブール・セットが何組かありますから。

Feb the 15th meet

Well as it was not raining or snowing on the 15th we decided to risk playing at Nishi Ohata park and luckily it only started raining at 4.30pm when we had just finished our last game. I was surprised to see about 10 players show up including 3 members from the other Niigata Petanque club located in Kobari. We played several doubles and triples throughout the afternoon from around 1pm and the most challenging matches were against the members from the other Niigata club, whose pointing skills were fantastic getting right next to the cochonnet almost every time. We tried our best to gain some points but any points we did get we not enough to keep the opposing team from winning. Pictured above are a few photos that I took last Sunday. Our next club day is the 1st of March and if it is fine we will play at Nishi Ohata, so if you are free please come along.

【２月１５日の例会】
さて、１５日には雨も雪もまだ降っていなかったので私達は敢えて西大畑公園でプレーすることにしました。そして幸運にも私達が最後のゲームを終えた４時半頃にようやく雨が降り出しました。驚いたことに小針の新潟ペタンク・クラブのメンバー３人を含めて１０人ものプレーヤ達がやって来ました。午後１時頃からダブルスやトリプルスのゲームを何試合か行いましたが、最も面白かったのは同じ新潟の私達とは別のクラブから参加したメンバー達との試合でした。ほとんど毎回コシネの直ぐ近くにピタリと寄せる彼らの標的を狙う技術は素晴らしいものでした。私達はベストを尽くして何点かを獲得しましたが、それでも及ばずに対戦相手に勝利を許してしまいました。上の写真は先日の日曜日に私が撮った写真です。私達の次のクラブ例会の日にちは３月１日です。天気が良ければ西大畑公園でプレーしますので時間があれば是非やって来てください。

Also to all those people who ordered NCP club caps, I have now placed the order with the supplier and the total cost for each cap came to 2000 yen, so to everyone who ordered caps if you could please pay me on the 1st of March I will then collect the caps and give them out on the 15th of March.

Feb 1st club day report

Well 5 players showed up for the 1st club day of 2009 and considering it was rather cold that was a good turnout. According to the report I received from Erik 3 players showed up around lunch time and were able to play a few single games and later in the afternoon two other players showed up allowing them to play doubles. Pictured above are a few photos that were taken on Sunday. Lets hope we start getting some warmer weather so we can return to our home ground at Nishi Ohata.

【２月１日のクラブ例会のリポート】
さて、２００９年の最初のクラブ例会には５人のプレーヤー達がやって来ました。当日は寒い天気だったことを考えれば、よく集まったものですね。私が受け取ったエリックからのリポートによれば、お昼頃には３人のプレーヤー達が集まってシングルスを何ゲームかやっていたら、午後になってしばらくして更に２人のプレーヤー達がやって来たので今度はダブルスのゲームをすることができたそうです。上の写真は日曜日に撮ったものです。早くもっと暖かい天気になって私達のホームグラウンドの西大畑公園に戻りたいものですね。

Jan 18th, First meet of the year

Well as expected a small group of players showed up at our wet weather spot under the bridge last Sunday to play and even though the weather was fine unfortunately Nishi Ohata park was under water which was a shame. After arriving at the park around 1.15pm Brian & I played a game or two until Takeishi showed up who then played the winner of each match. Not long after Mic arrived just in time for us to play some doubles so Mic & I played against Brian & Takeishi with Brian & Takeishi winning 13 - 3.

【１月１８日の今年最初の例会】
先日の日曜日には予想通りに少人数のプレーヤー達が橋の下の私達の雨天用の会場に姿を見せました。天気は良かったのですが、残念なことに西大畑公園は水で覆われていました。１時１５分頃に橋の下の公園に到着してブライアンと私が１ゲームか２ゲームするとその後のゲームでずっと勝者を演ずることになるタケイシさんが姿を見せました。ほどなくしてミック（サノ・ミキヒロさん）が折りよく到着したので私達はダブルスを行うことができ、ミックと私のチーム対ブライアンとタケイシさんのチームで対戦しましたが結果は１３対３でブライアン・タケイシ組の勝ちでした。

After that we swapped partners to play one of the most challenging games I have had in a while. Takeishi & I teamed up to play Brian & Mic and they got off to a quick lead gaining several points in the 1st few ends with a score of 7 - 0 , but soon we found our form and caught up to them them and after that it was even all the way to the end with opposing teams gaining one point on each end. Brian placed several outstanding carreaux shots which sent our boules flying of the peiste , he seems to have mastered his new shooting boules rather quickly and because of Brians outstanding shooting it was a hard fought match right to the very end. With their boule holding the point on the last end it was down to me to place the last boule of the game but unfortunately even though I tried my best I slightly over shot the cochonette with the final score being 13 - 12 to Brian & Mic.

その後、私達はパートナーを交換しましたが、次のゲームはここしばらくの間で私が経験した最も骨の折れるゲームのひとつとなりました。タケイシさんと私は一致団結してブライアンとミックの組と対戦しましたが、彼らの組は最初の数プレーで何点かの得点を挙げて抜け出して早くも７対０のスコアでリードしました。しかし直ぐに私達も調子を取り戻して彼らに追いつきました。そしてその後は互いに１点ずつを取り合う一進一退の攻防が続きました。ブライアンは何回か傑出したカロー・ショットを放ち私達のブールをピステの外へ弾き飛ばしました。傑出したショットを放つブライアンは早くも彼の新しいシューティング・ブールの扱いをマスターしたと見え、試合は最後の最後まで非常に白熱したものとなりました。試合の最後で彼らのブールが得点となっている状態で私の投球が最後の１球でした。しかし残念なことに私はベストを尽くしたのですがコシネをわずかに超えてしまうショットとなってしまい、最終的なスコアは１３対１２となりブライアンとミックの勝ちとなりました。

Foldable throwing circles

Hi Everyone

After returning from a trip abroad one of our members brought back the two foldable circles pictured above which we will use on club days from now on. So you will not have to draw circles all over the park anymore and these circles have recently been accepted by the International petanque assn for competition use. At present we only have the two pictured above but in the near future we may purchase more for tournament use.

海外旅行から戻った私達のメンバーの一人が今後のクラブの活動で使用できるようにと上の写真の“折りたたみ式の投球サークル”をふたつ持ち帰りました。ですからもう公園の至る所に円を描く必要はなくなりました。またこれらのサークルは最近、国際ペタンク協会により競技会での使用が認められました。私達は現在は上の写真のサークルをふたつ所有していますが、トーナメント用に近い将来もっと購入するかも知れません。

A Letter from Capt Carreaux

One of the first things I received this year was a letter from Capt Carreaux , who is Capt Carreaux ? Well put it this way you'll know when you meet him and his black boules on the piste and like his name suggests he is fond of the carreaux shot which is where he replaces your boule with one of his sometimes forcing you off the piste.In his letter to me he mentioned the history of the fanny, the dreaded 13-0 and a fantastic petanque themed haiku.

私が今年受け取った初物の1つは“キャプテン・カロー”からの手紙でした。ところで“キャプテン・カロー”って誰？　それはピステで彼と彼の黒いブールと遭遇すれば直ぐに分かりますよ。彼のニックネームが示唆するように、彼は相手のブールをピステの外に弾き飛ばして自分のブールがその場所に置き換わるカロー・ショットが大好きです。彼の手紙には１３対０の恐ろしいスコアにまつわる" the fanny"の歴史とペタンクに題材をとった素晴らしい俳句について書いてありました。

Peter Mayle, the francophile author of such books as A Year in Provence and Hotel Pastis, explains in his novel Encore Provence the origin of the petanque term "fanny". Fanny, according to Mayle, was a legendary provencal barmaid, a kiss from whom was the consolation prize for those petanquers who lost a game 13-0.

“A Year in Provence”や“Hotel Pastis”などの本の著者である親仏家のピーター・メイリーは彼の著書“Encore Provence”の中でペタンク用語"fanny"の起源について説明しています。メイリーによれば"Fanny"とはプロバンスの伝説的な女性バーテンで、彼女からのキスは１３対０で負けたペタンカーへの残念賞でした。

Defeat then had its tangible rewards, and I suspect not a few matches would have been thrown, especially if our Fanny had been a buxom lass.

ところでこのペタンク俳句、非常に面白いですよね。いつも拙い和訳で恐縮ですが、今回の“ペタンク俳句”は飛び切りの難物でした。季語と五・七・五の３句１７音からなる定型を踏襲した和訳は最初から無理だと思っていたので自由律俳句として和訳を試みましたが、それにしても難しくてなかなかピッタリとくる和訳ができません。これはと思う和訳の案がありましたらぜひ私にお知らせください。今年もペタンクを楽しみましょう。《高橋春樹》

End of year report 2008

Hi Everyone

First I'd like to thank all the Niigata City Petanque members for making 2008 a great year. Thanks to our club members who have introduced many new players to the fantastic sport of petanque, we are now able to hold more tournaments as we now have more active players. The following events will be held next year : Club doubles, mixed doubles, triples & a singles tournament as well as two inter club tournaments with Aoyama petanque club & hopefully the Kobari petanque club as well. One of the highlights for our club this year was our very 1st away game against the Aoyama Petanque club at their home ground in Aoyama park in Tokyo. This was a great learning experience for us as the Aoyama club has experience at national level and we soon realized that we really need to develop our shooting skills as this is our weak point in competition. Also after our trip to Tokyo we have started following the rules more closely and now we play on a standard size court and some of our members have started to develop some good shooting skills as well. Apart from the level of our game improving we now have a club logo which is used on our blog, club caps and future club T shirts which will be printed sometime in the New Year. Once I return to work on the 5th of January I'll up date the blog with the 2009 event list.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Xmas and I hope you all have a Happy New Year

【２００８年末のレポート】
みなさん、こんにちは
私はまず最初に、２００８年を素晴らしい年にしてくれたNiigata City Petanqueのメンバー全員に感謝したいと思います。多くの新しいメンバー達にこの素晴らしいスポーツであるペタンクを紹介してくれた私達のクラブメンバーのおかげで、私達は今や多くの活動的なメンバーを有してより多くのトーナメントを開催できるようになりました。

以下は来年開催予定のイベントです。：青山ペタクンクラブはもちろんのこと、上手く行けば小針のペタンククラブとのクラブ対抗戦、クラブダブルス、混合ダブルス、トリプルスとシングルスのトーナメントなどです。

今年の私達のクラブにとってのハイライトのひとつは、彼らのホームグラウンドである東京の青山公園での青山ペタンククラブとの私達にとってまさに第一回目の遠征試合でした。青山クラブは国の代表レベルの経験を有しているので、これは私達にとって非常に良い勉強の機会でした。私達はすぐに、それが競技会での私達の弱点であるシューティング技術を習得する必要があることをつくづく実感させられました。
また、東京遠征へ行って来てから私達はより厳密にルールに従うことを始めて、今では私達は標準的なサイズのコートでプレーをしていますし、もちろん私達のメンバー達はシューティング技術を習得し始めています。向上しつつある私達のプレーレベルは別として私達は今やクラブ・ロゴを有しており、それは私達のブログやクラブキャップと新年の適当な時期に作成される予定のクラブＴシャツに使用されています。私が１月５日に仕事に復帰したらこのブログの２００９年イベントリストを更新します。

みなさんが楽しいクリスマスと幸多き新年を迎えられますように！

Hi Everyone

Well I must say it was nice to see so many people at our last game of the year which was held at our wet weather spot under the bridge. Even though the weather was very nice on Sunday morning I knew it wouldn't last as it was bound to rain latter in the afternoon which it did. After hearing from Brian that 3 members of the Kobari petanque club would be joining us I decided to mark out two courts so everyone would have a chance to play. To my surprise we had 13 people show up on Sunday including Minagawa san who drove all the way up from Guma and brought his camp stove for some hot coffee as well as a metal bucket that he lit a fire in to keep us warm which was fantastic. As we had so many players we could play doubles & triples all afternoon, we finished out last game of triples just as it was getting dark and then a few of us stayed to chat, drink coffee and keep warm by the fire. The Kobari petanque players gave us a challenging afternoon of petanque which resulted in a few closely fought matches and some big leads as well. The Kobari club members also mentioned that their club will re open on the 21st & 22nd of March of 2009 and have invited us to join them on the 22nd from 10am till 2pm. I'll add this into next years playing schedule which is now looking pretty full. Once again thank you to everybody who showed up on Sunday and pictured above are a few photos taken at our last game of the year.

【１２月２１日の例会】
みなさん、こんにちは
さて、橋の下の私達の雨天用の会場で開催された今年最後のゲームであれほど多くの人達に会うことができて本当に嬉しかったですね。あの日曜日は朝方は天気は大変良かったのですが、後で実際に雨が降ったように晴天が長くは続かないであろうことは分かっていました。ブライアンから小針ペタンククラブのメンバー３人が参加しそうだと聞いていたので、私は皆がプレーできるようにコートを２面用意しました。驚いたことに日曜日には群馬から長距離ドライブで駆けつけた皆川さんを含めて１３人が参加しました。素晴らしいことに皆川さんは熱いコーヒーが飲めるようにキャンプ用ストーブと火を焚いて暖まれるように金属製のバケツを持ってきてくれました。プレーヤーが沢山いたので午後の間はずっとダブルスやトリプルスを行うことができました。ちょうど暗くなり始めた頃に最後のトリプルスが終わりましたが、私達の何人かはそのまま残ってお喋りをしたり、熱いコーヒーを飲んだり、焚き火で暖まったりしました。小針のペタンクプレーヤー達のおかげで大差のついたゲームや僅差のゲームなどでチャレンジングな午後のひと時を楽しむことができました。また、小針のクラブのメンバー達が言うには、彼らのクラブは２００９年３月２１日と２２日に再開されるとのことで２２日の午前１０時から午後２時までの例会に一緒に参加するように私達を招待してくれました。来年のプレースケジュールは既にかなりいっぱいになっていますが、私はそこにこのことを追加するつもりです。もう一度、日曜日に参加してくれたすべての人にお礼を言います。上の写真は私達の今年最後のゲームで撮ったものです。

Hi Everyone

Well next Sunday the 21st will be our last game for 2008 and as the weather has been rather bad recently I have decided to hold our last game of the year at our wet weather location under the bridge. If you don't know where the location is please check the link on the side of this blog which has a map of where we play. Because it gets dark rather early these days we will start at 11am.

みなさん、こんにちは。

さて、次の日曜日の２１日は私達の２００８年最後のゲームとなります。最近は天気の悪い日が続いているので、私は今年最後のゲームを橋の下の私達の雨天用の会場で開催することにしました。場所が分からなければ私達のプレー場所の地図が載っているこのブログの横のリンクをチェックしてください。最近は暗くなるのが早いので１１時から始める予定です。

Dec the 7th event report

Well on Sunday to my surprise it was sunny with blue sky in the morning so we decided to meet at Nishi Ohata park at 11am. Not long after arriving at the park a member of the other Niigata petanque club arrived whose home ground is located in Kobari, she introduced herself and then shortly after another member of their club arrived as well. It was nice to finally meet up with some members of the other petanque club as we only recently found it existed. One of the members who came along on Sunday said he had been playing for 15 years and they also host a Niigata tournament which we hope to join next year. After marking out the court with string we proceeded to play a couple of games then it started to rain. So we quickly packed up and moved to our wet weather area under the bridge to continue. To my surprise about 10 people showed up in the afternoon and the other two members of the Kobari club also arrived to play again. We had several triple matches throughout the afternoon and had some hot mulled wine & coffee thanks to Minagawa san and his camping stove which was very nice. After packing up around 4.30pm due to it being too dark & cold to play we then headed to the buffet restaurant for our Xmas party. Pictured above are a few photos that were taken on Sunday.

【１２月７日のイベントの報告】
さて、日曜日には驚いたことに朝方は青空が広がって快晴だったので、私達は１１時に西大畑公園に集合することにしました。公園に到着して間もなく、小針にホームグラウンドを有する他の“新潟ペタンククラブ”のメンバーの一人が到着しました。彼女の自己紹介の後まもなく、彼らのクラブのもう一人のメンバーが到着しました。つい最近その存在を知った他のペタンククラブのメンバー達ととうとう会えて嬉しく思いました。日曜日にやって来たメンバーのうちの一人は、彼らは１５年間プレーを続けていて来年は“新潟トーナメント”を開催すると言っていましたが、我々も参加したいですね。紐でコートをマーキングしてから２，３ゲーム行ったところで雨が降り始めました。そのため私達は急いで荷物をまとめて、プレーの続行のために橋の下の雨天用の場所へ移動しました。驚いたことにその日の午後にはおよそ１０人の人達がやって来てくれて、小針のメンバーの二人もプレーの再開のためやって来てくれました。私達はその日の午後はずっとトリプルスのゲームを数試合しましたが、皆川さんと彼の素晴らしいキャンプ用ストーブのおかげで温めたワインや熱いコーヒーを楽しむことができました。暗く寒くなって来たので、４時半頃には荷物をまとめて私達はクリスマスパーティーのためにビュッフェ・レストランへ向かいました。上に示したのは日曜日に撮った何枚かの写真です。

Below is a guide for players interested in purchasing competition boules. Competition boules differ greatly from leisure boules in that you can choose the weight, groove pattern ,diameter & hardness of the boule to suit your playing style. Also because of these factors competition boules are a lot more expensive than leisure boules. Choosing the right boules will have a great impact on your game.

【競技用ブールの選択】
下記は、競技用ブールの購入に興味を持っているプレーヤー達への手引きです。ブールの重さや溝のパターン、直径、硬さなどをプレースタイルに合わせて選ぶことができる点で、競技用ブールはレジャー用ブールとは大きく異なります。これらの要因のために競技用ブールはレジャー用ブールよりもずっと高価なものとなります。適切なブールを選ぶかどうかは試合に大きく影響します。

THROWING STYLE
Are you a shooter, a pointer or a all round player ?

<投球スタイル>
あなたは“相手のブールを弾き飛ばすタイプ”ですか？“標的に寄せるタイプ”ですか？それとも“オールラウンド・プレーヤー”ですか？

SIZE
The diameter of a boule affects how much control you have and how comfortable you will feel throwing it. If the boule is too small for you or too large you will have less control when throwing it and your hand will tire out more quickly. Pointers usually prefer smaller boules and shooters usually prefer larger ones.

<サイズ>
ブールの直径は投球の精度と投げた時の感触の良し悪しに影響します。ブールが小さ過ぎたり大き過ぎたりすると投球の際にコントロールが低下しますし、疲労の溜り方が早まります。“標的に寄せるタイプ”のプレーヤーは通常は小さめのブールを好みますし、“相手のブールを弾き飛ばすタイプ”のプレーヤーは通常は大き目のものを好みます。

WEIGHT
The weight of a boule affects how accurately you will be able to throw it, how tired you will get, and how the boule will react on impact. The heavier the boule, the less it will move after impact & the lighter the boule, the easier it is to throw. A boule that is too heavy for you will tire your arm out faster and cause you to throw short of your target & a boule that is too light, may cause you to overthrow your target. If you prefer rolling the boule, you should choose a heavier boule since they take a straighter path. If you throw the boule, you will want a lighter one to help reduce fatigue. The FIPJP allows weights within the 680 to 800 gram range for official play.

<重さ>
ブールの重さは投球の精度、プレーヤーの疲労度、命中した時の反発力に影響します。ブールが重ければ重いほど命中した後の動きが小さくなりますし、軽ければ軽いほど投球は容易となります。あまりにも重過ぎるブールはプレーヤーの腕を早く疲れさせて、投球の際に目標まで届かなくなる原因となります。また、あまりにも軽すぎるブールは目標を超えてしまう悪投球の原因となってしまいかねません。ブールを転がすのを好むのであれば、より重いブールを選んだ方が良いです。何故ならば、その方が真っ直ぐ転がるからです。ブールを投げるのならば、疲労軽減のためにもより軽いブールが欲しくなると思います。ＦＩＰＪＰ（国際ペタンク連盟）は公式競技用として６８０～８００グラムの範囲で認可しています。

GROOVE PATTERN
The groove pattern will affect your grip on the boule, the spin as you throw, and the way it rolls on impact. In general, the smoother the surface, the smoother it leaves the hand the more grooves, the easier it is to grip and the more it grips the ground. If you prefer rolling the boule, you should choose one with more grooves if you prefer throwing the boule, you should choose a smoother surface and if you are a pointer, you should choose a grooved pattern so it grips the ground. For the leisure player the groove patterns greatest value is in distinguishing which boules belong to which players when it is time to add up the score.

<溝のパターン>
溝のパターンはブールの握り具合、投球時のスピンのかかり具合や着地後の転がり具合に影響します。一般的には、表面が滑らかなほど手からの離れ具合も滑らかです。また、溝が多ければ多いほど握るのが容易で、なお且つ地面をしっかり捉えます。ブールを転がすのを好むのであればより溝の多いものを選ぶべきですし、投げるのを好むのであれば表面がより滑らかなものを選ぶべきです。もし“標的に寄せるタイプ”であれば地面をしっかり捉えるように溝パターンのあるものを選んだほうがよいでしょう。専らレジャーとして楽しむプレーヤーにとっては、溝のパターンが最も役立つのは得点を集計する時にどのブールがどのプレーヤーのものか区別するためにです。

HARDNESS
Boules range in hardness from very soft, semi soft & hard. Harder boules are more durable & last longer. Softer boules will move less when hit but scratch & dent easier. Hard boules are best option if you are a leisure player, play on a rough surface, or prefer to roll. If you are an all round player you should choose a semi soft boule as these are designed for both pointing & shooting.

TOURNAMENT MARKINGS
When playing in official tournaments it is required that all boules have the following marks clearly visible. This includes the manufacturer's trademark, identification number, and weight. It may also include engravings of a player or team's initials, name, or logo.

<トーナメント用のマーキング>
公式トーナメントでプレーする時にはすべてのブールに以下のマークがはっきりと見えることが求められます。これにはメーカーの商標、識別番号、重さなどが含まれます。プレーヤーまたはチームのイニシャル、名前、ロゴなどが含まれるかも知れません。

Dec the 7th Xmas party information

This year for our Xmas party we'll be playing some friendly games at Nishi Ohata park and because it gets dark so early now we'll be starting at 11am. If the weather is bad we'll play at our wet weather location under the bridge. Also after playing petanque for those who want to we'll be having our Xmas dinner party at " The Buffet Style Rouji " we went there last year for our club anniversary dinner and as you can see from below they offer a very good deal on dinner & drinks.

【１２月７日のクリスマス・パーティーのお知らせ】

November the 16th meet

Well as it was raining on the 16th we played at our wet weather location under the highway where there is plenty of space and it's nice and dry. To my surprise 9 members showed up for an afternoon of petanque and at first we had marked out two courts but later only really needed one, as most of the games were doubles or triples. From now on we are using 4mtr wide x 15mtr long courts which for some members took a little getting used to, but after a bit of practice most shots were within the boundaries. Since our friendly doubles match against Aoyama we have started following the rules more closely and many of our players have developed a more aggressive style of play which includes shooting as well as pointing. The games that were played on Sunday were a lot of fun and the scores were very even most of the way.

【１１月１６日の例会】
さて１６日は雨が降っていたので私達は幹線道路の下の雨天用の場所でプレーしましたが、そこは十分な広さがありとても素敵でしかも乾いていました。驚いたことに、９人ものメンバー達が午後のペタンクのために姿を見せてくれました。最初は２面のコートを線引きしましたが、ほとんどのゲームはダブルスかトリプルスだったので結局は１面のコートだけで十分でした。今後は私達は４ｍ×１５ｍのコートを使用するつもりです。何人かのメンバー達は慣れるのに少し時間を要しましたが、少し練習した後ではほとんどのショットが境界内に納まるようになりました。青山ペタンクとの親善ダブルス試合以来、私達はより厳密にルールに則ることを始めましたし、多くのプレーヤー達は標的に近づけるのはもちろんのことシューティングも取り入れたより積極的なスタイルを開発しました。日曜日にプレーしたゲームは非常に面白いものでしたし、ほとんどは非常な接戦でした。

Kobari Petanque club

Hi Everyone

Recently while one of our club members was practicing petanque at Nishi Ohata he happened to met up with a petanque player who informed him of another petanque club located within the city. So much to our surprise there happens to be another petanque club in Niigata city and according to the member who spoke with him they have been playing petanque in the city for several years and have around 30 members and they play every weekend on Sat & Sundays. They are also lucky to have their own private petanque court located within the grounds of the Kobari baseball park. So with a day off yesterday I decided to try and find their petanque club and as it's located in a corner of the baseball park which is fenced off and at present they have closed the courts for winter but will re open around March of next year. The surface appears to be very smooth and it was hard to tell if it was a clay surface or fine gravel from a distance, but they do have 6 courts marked out for petanque and I can imagine in summer it would be a very nice place for a few games and a picnic under the trees. So with any luck we should be able to organize a visit to their club next year for a friendly tournament.

【小針ペタンク・クラブ】
みなさん、こんにちは。
先日私達のクラブ・メンバーの一人が西大畑公園でペタンクの練習をしている時に、自分は市内の別のペタンク・クラブのメンバーだと云う人と遭遇しました。驚いたことに、新潟市には思いがけずもうひとつのペタンク・クラブがあったんですね。その人によれば、彼らは市内で何年にもわたってペタンクをしていて、メンバーはおよそ３０人で毎週土曜日と日曜日にプレーをしているとのことでした。彼らは幸運にも小針地区にペタンク・コートを有しているとのことです。そこで、私は昨日は仕事が休みだったので彼らのペタンク・クラブを探し出してみようと思い立ちました。彼らのコートは現在は閉鎖されていますが来年の３月頃には再開されるようです。グラウンドの表面は非常に滑らかに見えましたが、遠くから見たので粘土質なのか細かい砂利なのかの区別は困難でした。しかし、線で区切られた６面のペタンク・コートがあり、夏の頃にはゲームをしたり、木々の下でピクニックをするのに最適な場所だと想像できました。うまく行けば来年は彼らを訪ねて親善試合を持つことも可能に違いないと思われます。

BYO Event info

Hi Everybody

We have decided to make a slight change to this Sunday's event and it is now a BYO event which means just bring whatever you would like to eat & drink etc. Please note that we will not have a BBQ available this Sunday, but we may hold the Boules, Brews & BBQ event at an earlier date next year when the weather is better. We are also starting earlier than usual as now it gets dark & cold quite early in the day so if we start at this earlier time we can at least get in a few more games before it gets too cold. Also on Sunday you'll be able to play upon our new marked out courts that are the international standard size of 4 mtrs wide x 15mtrs long.

【ＢＹＯイベントに関するお知らせ】
みなさん、こんんちは。
私達は今度の日曜日のイベントを少し変更することにしました。ＢＹＯイベントに変更しましたが、それは自分で食べたり飲んだりしたい物を持ち寄るということです。今度の日曜日にはバーベキューは使えないということに注意してください。しかし、天気がもっと良い来年のもっと早い時期にはBoules, Brews & BBQのイベントを行うことができるかもしれません。また、この時期は日が暮れて寒くなるのが早いのでいつもより早く開始する予定です。早く始めれば暗くなる前に少なくとも２，３ゲームは余計に行うことができます。また日曜日には、国際標準サイズの４ｍ×１５ｍに印を付けた新しいコートの上でプレーすることができますよ。

Sunday practice

Yesterday Brian, Erik, Sunil & I played a few games at Nishi Ohata park and even though there was a light drizzle mid afternoon we managed to play several games of doubles & singles and we were able to test out the new terrain boundaries that I had made from string. From now on when we play we'll be using these string markers which are 4 mtrs wide x 15 mtrs long which is the international size for petanque. Brian also brought his camp stove so we were also able to enjoy some nice hot coffee while playing and near the end of the afternoon we had a shooting competition to test our shooting skills.

Pictured above are a few photos that I took yesterday at the park showing the new terrain boundaries plus the trees at Nishi Ohata are looking really nice at present with their Autumn colors.

【日曜日の練習】
昨日、ブライアン、エリク、スニルと私は西大畑公園で少しゲームをしました。午後の途中には霧雨のような雨が降りましたがなんとか何ゲームかのダブルスやシングルスのプレーをすることができ、私が紐で作った新しい“テランの境界線”を試して見ることができました。これから私達がプレーする時はいつも国際サイズの４ｍ×１５ｍの長さのこの紐でできたマーカーを使用しましょう。ブライアンがキャンプ用のストーブを持って来てくれたので、私達はプレーの最中に美味しいホットコーヒーを楽しむことが出来ました。そして午後の遅い頃には私達のシューティング技術をテストするためにシューティング競争をしました。

上は私が日曜日に西大畑公園で撮った何枚かの写真です。テランの境界線が見えますし、更に今の西大畑の木々が秋色をまとってとてもきれいに見えることが分かります。

Niigata vs Aoyama petanque club part 3

I would like to thank the Aoyama petanque club for their fine hospitality and a enjoyable day of petanque, good food & wine and to our Niigata City Petanque team members who made the journey to Tokyo for the tournament. As you can see from the scores posted above there were 14 games played throughout the day and out of those 14 games there were 4 games were the points were very close indeed. With some shooting practice I'm sure we'll all improve our game which will make a difference when we play in club matches and future tournaments. After playing petanque all day we then packed up the tables, chairs and shade tent and preceded to a nearby Izakaya to have dinner & drinks. Over dinner we discussed the days play and techniques for improving our game and it was proposed that next year the Aoyama petanque club visits Niigata for a doubles tournament so it looks like we now have an annual event in place which is great as it gives us a year to improve our skills for the next time we meet up. Pictured above are a few photos of the dinner party and a very tired Niigata City petanque member fast asleep on the bullet train.

【新潟市　対　青山ペタンククラブ　パート３】
彼らの素晴らしいもてなし、ペタンクと美味しい食べ物とワインの楽しい１日について青山ペタンク・クラブに私は感謝したいと思います。そして、トーナメントのために東京へ旅をした新潟市ペタンク・チームのメンバーにも感謝したいと思います。掲載されたスコア表から分かるように14ゲームが行われましたが、そのうちの4ゲームは得点が非常に接近したものでした。私は、シューティング練習をすることにより私達の皆が将来の他のクラブとの試合やトーナメントで差をつけられるような進歩をするだろうと確信します。１日中ペタンクをした後はテーブル、椅子、日除けテントを片付けてから懇親会のために近くの居酒屋へ向かいました。夕食をとりながらその日のプレーやゲームの向上ための技術について意見交換をしました。そして来年は青山ペタンク・クラブが新潟を訪問しダブルス・トーナメントを行うことが提案されました。これは毎年の恒例行事になりそうですが、来年の会までに私達が技術を向上させる時間が1年とれるということは重要なことです。上の写真は、懇親会の様子と草臥れ果てた新潟市ペタンク・クラブのメンバーが新幹線の車中でぐっすりと眠っている写真です。

Niigata vs Aoyama petanque club part 2

The tournament format for the day was a doubles tournament but later on in the afternoon a few triples matches were played as well. As it was a friendly tournament there was plenty of time to rest in between games and I would like to thank everybody who provided the fantastic food & drinks that we had throughout the afternoon. The level of petanque was very high and the Aoyama players had their shooting skills down to a fine art which made the biggest difference to the overall scores throughout the day. Many of the Aoyama players have experience at national level and are highly ranked in Japan. In saying that I think that Niigata city petanque club put in a grand effort for such a young club and a few of the games were very close indeed with only a few points separating each team. Even though we managed to get our boules in as close as possible to the cochonette by pointing they were often shot out of the way by the Aoyama members who placed some fantastic carreau shots which is something our club needs to practice to in order to play a more challenging game. Playing against such talented players was a great learning experience for all of us and just goes to show what an interesting & challenging game petanque can be.

【新潟市　対　青山ペタンククラブ　パート２】
その日のトーナメント形式はダブルス・トーナメントでしたが、午後遅くにはいくつかのトリプルス・マッチも行われました。親善試合だったのでゲームの合い間にはたっぷりと休憩時間がありました。私は午後の間ずっと楽しむことができた素晴らしい食べ物と飲み物を用意してくれたすべての人に感謝したいと思います。当日のペタンクは非常にハイレベルで、青山のプレーヤー達は芸術的なシューティング技術を有していて、その日のスコアに最も大きな差を生じさせました。青山のプレーヤー達の多くは日本代表レベルの経験を有しているし、国内の上位にランクされています。私が思うには、新潟市ペタンク・クラブは新興クラブとしては大いに奮闘しましたし、ほんの数ポイントが勝負を分けた接戦もありました。たとえ私達ができるだけコショネの近くにブールをポイントしたとしても、青山のプレーヤー達による素晴らしいカロー・ショットによって弾き飛ばされたしまいました。この技術は私達がもっとチャレンジングなゲームをするために練習する必要があるものです。そのように優秀なプレーヤー達と対戦することは、私達皆にとって非常に大きな学習の機会でした。そして、ペタンクがいかに興味深くてやりがいのあるものとなり得るかを示すものでした。

Niigata City Petanque club VS Aoyama Petanque club

Well we have just held our very first away game against another club and on Sunday Nov the 2nd, 10 players from Niigata City petanque club went to Tokyo for a friendly doubles tournament against Aoyama petanque club. Some of us went by night bus and the rest arrived on bullet train on the day. Brian & I were the first to arrive and we were slightly confused when we arrived at the park to find another Aoyama petanque club already set up & practicing as we had no idea that two clubs with similar sounding names shared the park together often playing on the same day. After a short while Adrian the president of Aoyama petanque club showed up and explained the reason why two different clubs use the same area and then he proceeded to mark out three terrains for us to play upon. Shortly after the remaining Niigata players & Aoyama players arrived and once our teams were written up on the score board we were given plenty of time to practice on the unfamiliar terrain before the tournament got underway. Also a large table & shade tent was erected to hold all the refreshments & food which everybody had so kindly brought along. Just watching the Aoyama players practice we realized that we were in for an interesting day as their shooting skills were fantastic. The terrain that we were playing upon was a mixture of fine gravel & stones which was quite different to the hard packed clay surface that we play upon. さて、私達は他クラブとのまったく初めての遠征試合を11月2日（日）に開催しました。新潟市ペタンク・クラブからは10人のプレーヤーが青山ペタンク・クラブとの親善試合のために東京に出向きました。何人かは夜行バスで、そしてその他の人達は当日の新幹線で東京へ向かいました。ブライアンと私が最初に到着しましたが、私達は“もうひとつの青山ペタンク・クラブ”が既に準備を完了して練習しているのを発見して少し困惑しました。しばらくすると青山ペタンク・クラブの代表者のエイドリアンが姿を見せましました。そして彼は二つの異なるクラブが同じ場所を使用するに至った理由を説明してくれて、私達がプレーするための３つのテランの線引きをしました。新潟と青山の残りのプレーヤー達が到着すると直ぐにチーム名をスコアボードに書き出してからは、私達にはトーナメントが始まるまでに慣れないテランで練習するための十分な時間がありました。また、大きなテーブルと日除け用のテントが組み立てられて、皆が持ち寄った心づくしの飲み物や食物が振舞われました。青山のプレーヤー達のシューティング技術は素晴らしいものだったので、彼らの練習を見て直ぐに今日は非常にためになる日だと分かりました。当日のテランは細かい砂利と石でできていたので、私達がプレーする堅い粘土質のテランとはまったく異なっていました。トーナメントに関する更なる情報についてはこの後の投稿をチェックしてください。

Otago's youngsters are taking petanque seriously.

A surge in the popularity of the sport among school-aged players meant teams had to be turned away from the Southern Regions Secondary Schools Cup event at the Caversham Pentanque club yesterday, tournament organiser Terry Holt said.

The tournament involved 28 teams from eight Dunedin and Timaru schools and three teams had to be turned away because the facilities were full.

"Schools and young people are really getting behind petanque now."

The sport had been encouraged in the region's schools, Holt said.

"We've been doing more than other areas to promote the sport. I've been to over 123 primary and secondary schools in the southern region and coached pentanque over the years."

The standard of the players at the tournament was the highest he had seen in 10 years involvement with the sport, he said.

"For this tournament, we have New Zealand representatives. There are some really good players here."

Aaron Ravenwood (16), of Kings High School, said he enjoyed the competition.

He began playing when he was 11 and said petanque appealed to young people.

"I like it because it involved thinking and logic. It's more than a pastime - it gets pretty competitive."

A week before the tournament, five girls from the region were selected for the New Zealand youth pentanque team to play Australia in Auckland next month.

The five girls are Sarah Lyall (15), Taieri College; Kelsey Bradshaw (18), Queens High School; Amy Beatson (16), Timaru Girls High School; Sarah-Jane Copeland (16), South Otago High School; and Jamie Richardson (18), who attended Logan Park High School last year .

Amy said she was excited to be selected for the national team.

"Its pretty awesome. We think it's great because a lot of people come up to me and and say `you're in the New Zealand team'."

She said the key to successful pentanque was good strategy.

"It's really about concentrating and having a good attitude."

The Southern Region Secondary Schools Cup was won by Timaru Girls High School, which beat Kavanagh College 3-1 in the final.

Hi Everyone

Well after a year of playing we have finally organized our first ever tournament against another club. As you can see from the above picture we are off to Tokyo on the 2nd of November to play a friendly doubles tournament against the Aoyama Petanque club. And I am pleased to say that 10 players will represent Niigata city petanque club on the 2nd of November. Listed below are the double teams for Tokyo.

Hi Everyone Well I'm happy to say we finally have a club logo that can be used on our blog and T shirts . After trying several different designs over the past year we have finally decided on the logo above which was a combined effort between Ken & I . Ken who is a professional graphic designer used my layout idea and came up with the logo pictured above. The design was approved by several members at our singles tournament and when I have info on our club T shirts I'll let everyone know the costs involved and the sizes.

Oct 19th Petanque meet

First I'd like to thank everybody who came along to petanque on Sunday as we had about 15 players show up and played several games of doubles ( practice for our up coming tournament against Aoyama Petanque club ) and several games of triples as well. In the final match of the day the men challenged the ladies to a triples match to be played to 15 points with the ladies winning 15 - 11. The piste was in perfect condition which made playing even better with the boules rolling with ease. Minagawa san showed up from Guma with a set of antique large boules and proceeded to play with them for the day which was rather funny as it was like dodging cannonballs on the piste. We finished before the light faded and then several of us headed to our new hangout " The Local " a New Zealand owned bar/restaurant located in the center of the city not far from where we play to enjoy dinner & drinks plus we had the added bonus of listening to some fantastic live jazz.

I'm also sorry to inform you all that I made a mistake while up loading the photos from yesterday and I lost them which is a shame as I had some great photos.

【１０月１９日のペタンク例会】
まず最初に日曜日にペタンクにやって来てくれた皆に感謝したいと思います。およそ１５人のプレーヤが参加してダブルス・ゲーム（来るべき青山ペタンク・クラブとの対抗ダブルスに向けての練習）を何試合かしたりトリプルス・ゲームも何試合かしました。その日の最後の試合は男性陣と女性陣の１５点までのトリプルス・マッチでしたが、女性陣が１５対１１で勝利しました。試合場は申し分のないコンディションでブールが良く転がってプレーがし易い状態でした。皆川さんは群馬から大きなアンティーク・ブールを持ってやって来てそれらのブールでプレーをしましたが、試合場では砲弾を避けるような愉快な光景が見られました。日が落ちる前に例会を終えて、何人かは私達の新しい溜まり場「ザ・ローカル」（市の中心部に位置し、私たちのプレー会場からそれほど遠くないニュージーランド人オーナーのバー／レストラン）へ一杯やったり夕食を楽しんだりするために向かいました。そこでは思いがけなく素晴らしいジャズのライブを聴く機会に恵まれました。

残念なことに、昨日からの写真をアップ・ロード中に手違いがあってそれらの写真を失ってしまいました。良い写真が色々あったので残念です。
